zappa getting the band back together

So I bought some stuff from oreillies this morning. They offer a vets discount if you show them your "dod" number. I just showed them my va hospital card and that works.

Can anyone tell me what the dod number is ? Is that what they give you now in boot camp instead of a service number ?

"Department of Defense" I'd guess.
Well, yeh. But did it replace the service number you get in boot camp ? So does the DI now come up to you and say "whats's your DoD number, maggot ?

BTW, I know that Im dating myself. My service time was 1967 to 1970. I think they went to ssn for active duty some time after I got out. Just wondered if the dod number was now used from boot camp and beyond.

Whole new numbering system, as indicated by AH64ID, to take place of the SSN and any previous numbers. I believe it was 1974 when they converted from Service Number to SSN. I remember having to get an updated ID for my wife and myself. Phase out of SSN to DOD Number began sometime after December 2015. After decades of giving our well memorized SSNs we are forced to pull out the DD Forms 2 and 1173 (ID cards) and recite a barely visible lengthy number. Then when you turn 65 you get a new Benefits Number on top of that identifying Medicare as the prime medical coverage. Too many numbers...Argh! o_O

Yeah...:D There's plenty of us on the TDR that are members of the O.F. club.

I just show them my retired ID card. Dod numbers came in after I retired. My ID card has my SSN on it. I'd get a new style but I lost the real SSN card over 30 years ago and haven't bothered to get another one.

I'm pretty sure the DI cant call them Maggot anymore (even that used to be soft). Now I think they are issued some type of "time out"card they can give the DI if they are feeling uncomfortable. Pretty sure DI also now asks if their sensitive vulnerabilities have been offended and if they would like a latte while they calm themselves in a safe room somewhere.

A guy on local radio played a russian, chinese, and American recruiting ad. The russians, were shirtless, very lean and muscular, carrying guns, ready to fight. The chinese were the same. The American was a little girl who talked about finding satisfaction and improving herself (or something like that )in the army. She was a corporal.

I trained in Ft. Sill, OK back in FY 97'... October 1st of 1996 is when the Army lost the pistol belt and whistle... Uniform was different, but our Drill Sergeants were the same as the day before!!! I'm sure the next cycle was granted a change, but it would've ruined everything they did thus far...

Medicare also switched away from one's SSA number to a new numbering system. I just show my Choose VA VIC card. Ace gives 10% also. Works at Home Depot, Lowes has the info in my "MY Lowes" account. Now only if someone that sold good IPA beer would honor it!!!!!
