I told the dealer not to do it; I didn't believe it was in accordance with the Cummins engine maint guidelines and Dodge's guideline was based on a gasoline engine. Taking apart the injection system seems to be looking for trouble where there is none IMO. The "injection system cleaning" was a standard checkbox for the 30,000 mile service.

Does anyone have info to the contrary? I'm looking up the Cummins spec too; of-course; it's at the dealer now so looking for the quickie answer.

I think you have chosen well, grasshopper. I wouldn't let the dealer touch the injection system. I've heard of cleaning injectors on gas burners. This just involves pouring some stuff in the engine, no dis-assembly. Don't know if it's a worthwhile thing to do, or not on gas burners.

Yep; thanks. Thought so.

So; HEADS-UP. When you take the truck in for a regular interval maintenance check tell them not to mess with the injection system.

So if it says: 'replace spark plugs' at some point in the service interval - are they going to argue with you that you need to replace your spark plugs too?

Dealers crack me up... . :-laf

I just went through the same thing last week, had to remind the service writer that my truck was not a gasser.

FYI: Cummins has given their blessings to a diesel injector cleaner from Valvoline. SynPower is the brand, you dump a bottle in at every oil change. I picked up a case of 12 ($3. 97 a bottle) at Cummins West in San Leandro.

If you want to do a fuel injection service it is legit. Many diesel shops have special equiptment to perform this service, but you can get very similiar results by using your favorite fuel additive full strength in your fuel filter housing.

Any additional info on this? I mean, in what way did Cummins give their blessings to this stuff?

I got a kick out of a detailed DC instruction for an engine bay procedure that instructed the "technician":

"First, open hood"...

Any Dealership tech so dumb DC thinks they need THAT much instruction ain't gettin' anywhere NEAR my truck... ;)

REALLY!? You say you got it at the local Cummins shop? I need to pick up a case, then!!Oo.

Yep, picked up a case from Cummins West (San Leandro, CA). The pints are a better deal ($3. 97 versus $13. 45 for quarts) and will treat 45 gallons. I just ran some through my truck, the idle is smooth as butta! Directions on the bottle say to use it at every oil change but Cummins techies say every 4 or 5 tankfuls would be cool.
