Towing Camping Trailer in the U.S.

Heres some more info from Dodge.com

looks Like the specs say up to 16,500# tow rating and 23K# GCWR with the cummins

Yes - the GCWR is the same as the pickup. The trailer can be a little heavier, and the payload went up, because of no box installed. Any aftermarket fitments will bring it down to where a pickup is at or less.

So other than a new frame, 2wd straight axle, 6. 7 motor, and optional 6 speed auto, its really nothing new. All good stuff no doubt, but doesn't really move the bar up IMO.

Now give me the 6 sp auto and straight axle in a 2wd Megacab longbed dually pickup and I'd seriously think about trading in my 2nd gen that isn't even broken in yet (49K miles on the odo).

The "GCWR" of 23,000 is as always a warranty issue and even more so with these new trucks. These trucks have a 12500 GVWR and weigh 7000.

That leaves a 5500 lbs pin weight staying within GVWR and GAWRs. That translates to roughly a 22 THOUSAND pound trailer, or a GCWR of 29,000 lbs. I am sorry to all the arm chair DOT officers on here but that is legal. Only thing Dodge can do is not warranty you when it blows up the G56. The 6spd auto will hold up to that (that transmission is in 33,000 GVWR trucks I think putting out 350 HP and 750 LB FT) but I have no clue about the G56.

With this truck you are getting a real frame, straight axle on the 2WD giving you increase GAWR to 5200 (not sure what this is on the new 2WD to be honest with you), a bigger fuel tank, increased GVWR, high idler (this might be on all 04? 05? + trucks?), 220 amp alternator option (a must!) and a 84" CA length option (only on the reg cab I believe).

Dodge should've called this a 3750 or a 4000 or something to really set it apart from a regular bed off 3500.

I can see a 23K GCWR as a marketing move to make room for a 4500. I suspect it will be 25,999 lbs to keep it under the 26K threshold for CDL. That would put the 5500 in the 28 to 30K range.

I wonder what tires they are putting on it. My company just bought a POS ferd 6. 0 350 SRW to mount a service body. It has Load range For G 18 inch tires on it. I am sure those tires could be picked up at any roadside tire shop!

Well the gross COMBINED weight rating is still 23,000 lbs... ... ..... in spite of all the hoopla... for towing, nothing has changed except the gross VEHICLE weight rating. And where is the 4500/5500??????

The gross combination weight rating that a manufacturer gives has no effect on CDL or not unless its written on the door tag (and it never is).

So Dodge could give the 4500 a 27000 lbs GCWR and you wouldnt need a CDL unless you hooked up a trailer to it where the GVWR of the truck added to the GVWR of the trailer was MORE than (not equal to) 26000 lbs.

Again the GCWR is 23000 lbs for Dodge's warranty sake and like others said so they have buyers for the 4500/5500's when they come out. The Dodge declared GCWR is not a legal number. GVWRs and GAWRs are legal (whatever is on the door tag is legal).

I do not know anything about 18's... they make LR G 18" tires? What size are these just out of curiosity? 2??/??R/18 ?

I know the door sticker does not have legal standing in the US like I have heard it does in Canada. However, the nice little men in the cars are trained to know that pickups with big butts and medium dutys are easy targets. In GA they have a 10K threshold for commercial licence. I have been at several Farm Bureau meetings where this is explained, but I do not remember the particulars.

They also know that that 4500 and 5500 trucks are commercial vehichiles nearly every time they hit the road. My company NEVER got pulled over or checked until they started driving the 4500 and the 450. They now have been chased down and ticketed 3 times in a year. When they determine you are commercial, they can write tickets till their hand gets sore. Oh you are commercial, where is your log book, where are your DOT numbers on the side of the truck, where is your health card, where is your fire extingisher, where are your flares, ECT.

As far as the 18" tires, I do not remember. They were Continentials, I believe with a 3600LB +/- weight rating.
