We have already 'flipped' the axles on our 5th wheel trail... it is a 27ft Arctic Fox with a super slide.
Thanks to all of you who have helped educate me!

Yes, per the Dodge 2009 towing guide, any transmission, gear ratio or GVWR for the 4500/5500 is still rated at 26,000 GCWR.

The 3500 cab/chassis with Asian (4. 10 only) is 12,500 GVW and 24,000 GCW.

The 3500 cab/chassis with G56/3. 42 is 12,500 GVW and only 19,000 GCW. So you are right, 3. 42 is reduced by 5,000 lbs:eek:

The 3500 cab/chassis with G56/3. 73 or 4. 10 is 12,500 GVW and 24,000 GCW.

The 4500 is offered in 15,000 or 16,500 GVW with Asian, gears are 4. 44 or 4. 88. With G56, gears are 4. 10 or 4. 44.

The 5500 with Asian is offered with 4. 88 only. The G56 is 4. 44 or 4. 88 and 19,500 GVW

Sorry, I am not smart enough to post tables or links.

Nick,

Thanks for posting those details. I"m not smart enough to post photos, charts, and tables either.

The factory specs tell us lots of things. They are always worth reviewing before ordering a new truck or buying one off a lot. Differential gear and transmission choices have consequences. Many of our TDR members overlook those details assuming all Dodge-Cummins trucks are the same then later post their problems or disappointments too late after they own the truck.

You are welcome Harvey.

One other interesting tidbit of info, following in your comment about factory specs and may fit in with a related post (Aisin max hp/tq rating) is that Dana recommends no more than 310 hp and 600 tq for the 4500/5500 axles. Maybe Dodge is honoring this? Maybe that is why Dodge went to the AAM axles in the high powered pickup wars?

PS: Spell check goes crazy with Aisin:)
