I'd classify this rumor along with the "Ford owns Cummins" myths. Since Cat is exiting the on-highway diesel engine business, why would they want to get involved with light duty trucks by a company on very soft financial ground?

false, as of '10 CAT will no longer make engines to be used on highways. It wasn't worth the money to be '10 compliant as OTR engines makes up barely 10% of its sales.

Not a chance. MShaheen is right, although at one time, Cat had 90% of the market share in OTR engines, it still didn't bring alot to the bottom line. All Cat was selling is an engine to an OEM, whereas they can sell a complete wheel-loader on the equipment side. On the Industrial side, some of the engines are $400,000+.

On the other hand, I could see Cummins leaving the Dodge relationship behind if Dodge gets to the point that they cannot afford to purchase the minimum # of engines required by their contract. If it were to get bad enough that Cummins cant make the profit margins (due to slow truck sales) to justify development, they will leave and find another end user for their product.

It is a legitimate question to ask because of the number of crazy rumors out there. They don't tend to come up on this forum much but if you watch some of the others, you will see posts by people who think that ford owns cummins constantly and lots of other misinformation.

For the foreseeable future, dodge will be sticking with cummins. Ford and Navistar will be splitting at the end of this year and ford will use an in-house 6. 7L engine known as the "scorpion". GM/chevy will continue to use their duramax engines.
