My stock 06 - 2500, 18 months old with 15,500 miles required a new turbo because the original was making excessive noise.

The Service Manager assured me prior to scheduling the work that the replacement turbo would be brand new in a box from Cummins/Mopar.

With the turbo now replaced I was looking at the work order and noticed the replacement turbo part # is R5143256AA.

I did a Google search on that part # and it took me to a Chrysler page that lists Cummins REMANUFACTURED parts.

I am getting ready to confront the Service Manager with what I have discovered and I am wondering if anyone else has had warranty repairs on a new truck completed with used parts.

I strongly believe that the turbo should have been replaced with a brand new unit.

If I had bought a used truck for much less $ with some miles on it, I could understand using a reman. in that situation.

I realize the reman. is probably fine in the short run if it does'nt fail right off the bat. On the other hand there are other issues that may cause a reman. to fail much sooner in the long run but more likely after the 100K warranty has passed.

Any of your advice on this issue would be greatly appreciated!

Its manufactures decison. Poor old service manager(really its a PARTS manager involment) has nothing to do with it. If your engine failed today same deal. Its going to be a 'R"part number. It will be a "R" part number even if its a NEW part. Something to do with taxes and lowering cost of the part as they are selling it back to themselves. I wouldn't sweat it. Its warrantied up to 100k. Lots of "R"stuff is better then new. Its NOT a USED part anymore. Plus hate to say it,you won't get anywhere with a request of "take it off"I want a NEW one other then a headache for you and more stress on the service manager.

I certainly can't blame you for being upset, but I echo DP's remarks.

Turbos are very simple. About the only thing that can go bad is the bearing, which is simple to replace, so I think a reman unit would be fine.

Depending on the turbo or any other reman item, often the "Reman" part is a NEW part that is put into the pool of reman parts.

GONE are the days of something being replaced with a new part when they have it in a reman. They look at it like your vehicle is used so why not a reman? It may be that in the case of the turbo a reman IS better than new, you only got 15K out of a new one.

Your are probably lucky they even honored your warranty at this point in time, or had a replacement part timely to your needs. With all the financial problems that are going on for Chrysler and their suppliers things could get real interesting.

I would not worry about a reman all the guts of the turbo are new, just the housings are reused, and they have specs they have to go by in order to rebuild the turbo. Working for Caterpillar, they will reject core parts that do not meet their specs for reusability, any manufacturer works like that. All the reman parts I have installed have lasted as long if not longer than the original. I get customers demanding new parts, but it is not up to us as a dealer, Caterpillar tells us what they want and what they will cover.
