I cannot find the part number for a front axle seal on my 98 2500 Dodge with the (weak) Dana 60.

My passenger side seal is leaking. . Every parts store I call only lists them for a Dana 44. . When did they put a Dana 44 under a 2500 Dodge???

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Garrett

I just put some in my uncles 96 and he went to the local parts store. I know you probably know this but you have to spread the case to get the diff assembly out. Good luck sorry I can not help you with part number but he used Motor Parts store here in MN.

I replaced my drivers side last week. The book at the parts house lists the correct seal under the heading "spicer 44". I raised the same concern with the guy at the parts counter about dana 44's never being used with the cummins... . they had no other information to go on, so I bought the part they had listed under "spicer 44"... it is the correct part.

Bobcat:

If you recently removed the axle, its possible a bit of fluid leaked over the seal and is sitting in the axle tube. Try parking with the passenger side on a downhill overnight and see what happens... just may be a bit of residual fluid. . happened with mine.

good luck

I removed the axle shafts quite a few times this year. . But the last time was in July.

I saw it had drained onto the garage floor, so I had them add some fluid when I had the tires put on. It immediately poured out the passenger side axle tube when he put it in, so I'm pretty sure its shot...

Thanks for the idea though!

FWIW, you do not need to spread the case on a dana 60. With the wieght of the truck on jackstands (jackstands as far outboard as possible), put your jack under the differential and put just a little bit of upward pressure on the diff housing, you will be able to pull the carrier out. It won't "fall" out, you will have to pull on it, but it will come out without too much effort. All nay-sayers should have been in my garage last week when I pulled mine just like that.

For future reference, all nay-sayers who stand around in my garage are required to bring beer and not laugh at me when I hurt myself. :D
