Competition NV 4500 Longevity?

Competition DHRA Div 5 races scheduled for MO and CO

I was looking up some Dana parts and found a listing for Dodge axles. It seems that Dodge has been supplying Uncle Sam with some pull trucks for the Air Force with 7. 17 gears in them.

I assume that these are Cummins equiped trucks because they started in 1989 and go to 2002. The 1rst Gen. trucks are SRW 1 TON 4X4's and the 2nd Gen. trucks are all 2500 4X4's. Some of the early ones had Power-Loc's front and rear and some even had Detroit Lockers front and rear -- the 2nd Gen. trucks all had an open front end and P/L's in the reaer.

Here are some Build of material #'s:

605514-1 P/L 1991 to 1993. 5 Dana 70

605514-3 D/L 1991 to 1993. 5 Dana 70

610622-1 open diff. 1996. 5 Dana 60

606273-2 P/L 2001 Dana 70 w/ ABS

605489-1 P/L 1990. 5 Dana 70 w/ ABS

All of the desciptions for these trucks read " AIRFORCE TOW VEHICLE ".

I know this is WAY to much gear for most anyone , but I thought it would be good info to have when these things get old enough to go to auction. Look at the B. O. M. 's or count some teeth if you are getting an unknown axle assy. out of a Dodge from a military scrap yard. I would think that finding a first Gen w/ locking diff's. front and rear would be a terrific find.

Well I just thought that this was interesting info and I thought that I would share it with Ya'll... .

Air Foce Pull Trucks

Thomas, these pull trucks that you are mentioning have a top speed of about 35-40 mph. Yes, these trucks are CTD equiped and we even have about a dozen 24 valvers here with this set up, all of which are 2wd. I did see one while I was in Kuwait that was a 4wd, 24v, but that is the only one I have seen that is 4wd.

These trucks tend to stay with the Air Force for quite awhile. They are just now getting rid of some mid-80's furds like this. They may have to be destroyed like the Hummers when they are sold. :(

OMG. Is that in OD? Anyway, for what they are used for thats all the faster they need to be I guess.

Talk about short oil change intervals. :D

benhall -- Are these trucks just like a regular truck or are they a specialty built chassis? I have seen a lot of Ford Industrial applications that had a regular cab but a specific frame that looked nothing like what the general public can get. Is there anything else different about these trucks ?What did the Fords have in them engine wise ? TIA , Thomas

Wheelbase and frame

Thomas, these trucks do ride on a special frame and wheelbase dimension. Imagine having a reg cab short box Ram. Take the box off and slide the axle forward about a foot. I think these trucks use different leaf spring packages, but I'm not sure. The frame ends right where the leaf springs end at. These trucks have an aftermarket body on the back that is set up with three pintle hooks, so they can pull multiple pieces of AGE equipment or one ammo trailer. They also have a pintle hook on the front of the truck to see where they are backing something.

lmills, I'm not sure if the trucks have OD in them.

I can try to get some measurements and pics sometime, but with the way things are going right now, that might not be the best thing to do as far as pics go.

I agree, I don't think I would be walking around snapping pic's right now.

But then again, I am a service member that is a gear/diesel head. I'm off this coming week, so I will try and get a pic anyways.

when i was in teh Desert...

... we had '97 model CTD bobtails. They were all 12-valvers, but also 4WD, which is pretty rare. That thing topped out at 30mph turning 3100 rpm.

My troops would give me lots of crap, because all the other officers had staff vehicles (rentals) they would drive, while I CHOSE to tool around in a Cummins-powered bobtail. They just couldn't understand.
