After fixing the kdp damage I slipped the timing on my pump. When I was trying to find someone to reset it I went to the local dodge dealer to see what it would cost to have them do it. One of the techs there told me that they didnt have the tools to set the timing and they had to pull the pumps off and send them out to a shop to be set. I couldnt beleive this!! I wonder if they are charging people for r&r of a pump just to set the timing! Has anyone else heard this?

There is a timing blade on the side under a cap. This is what the Bosch dealer uses to "pin" the pump. Set the engine to TDC and assemble. Not near as good as the plunger lift method, but it will get you home.

In my limited diesel knowledge, if you pull the pump, the timing is lost. The pump must be timed in place. Like a distributor on a gas burner. The timing adjustment is accomplished by removing the oil fill tube and gaining access to the nut on the input of the pump. The input shaft is tapered, so when the nut is loosened, and the pump drive gear loosened from the input shaft, the shaft can be rotated independent of the gear. If I am wrong, someone please step up and teach me.

Eberga, I hope that helps you understand more.

Timing the pump is easy, it's more of a pain to find true TDC. Setting timing is not brain surgery, I've set them with the dial indicator and the manual method, both are fine except the manual method only requires a gear puller and not $250. 00 tool set... ... guess I will work on the instructions and finish them. It's like doing Governor Springs using calipers... . way over rated.
