You bet... awesome idea...

I vote for Farragut State Park, near Athol, Idaho. Papa Joe can tell us all about it. It has hosted groups in the tens of thousands before, and in the mid to late summer and early fall, it has wonderful weather... as well as being naturally beautiful.

It is the site, where, in 1942, the US Navy built the second largest training facility in the world. It has space, amphitheaters, museums, and group facilities capable of holding a 20,000 boy scout jamboree. It is a short distance from a wonderful theme park, lake Pend Orielle, Sandpoint, ID and Coeur D' Alene, ID. Lots of wildlife, as well.

It has RV and tent camping facilities.

To see a summary of the park, click here.

And here's a map:

#ad

The more I think about it, the more I like the idea. It need not cost the organizers any large amount, it would be a GREAT family vacation, as there's everything you ever wanted to do outdoors in the area, and everything is reasonably priced. There have been Boy Scout Jamborees of 35,000 held there before, so a few of us should not be a problem.

For those of you who've not visited the great Northwest, you're missing God's country, and those of you who have been here... well, I don't need to remind you that you really DO want to come back! Dave Smith Motors is just an hour or hour and a half drive from there - and it's the largest Dodge truck dealer in the world. Silverwood theme park is just a few minutes away, and it's a great family outing, with timber roller coasters, planned zoo, real steam train, and it's all totally wholesome.

Imagine this: it's not only a state park that welcomes you with your guns, but has a shooting range! It has horse facilities, as well, for those of you who like equestrian pursuits.

And not to mention, us Idaho Spuds are the nicest people in the world :)

And I almost forgot... This is a place where the locals would grin from ear to ear to see and hear thousand Cummins hummin :)

International rally

I think the idea is great I live in Canada and would love to come to such an event I have stayed in Farragut State Park and it is a beautiful area with great facilities. A suggestion is to have it in the early Fall less crowds and more likely to be able to book the park.

The idea is to have it when the whole family can go. Northern Idaho is family country... from theme parks to regular outdoor adventure. make it a vacation for a week and do truck stuff too

That means, during the summer, when school's out. besides, Farragut can only be reserved 11 months in advance

Farragut would be a great place to have it. Noise would not be a problem. However you will not be able to do any drag racing, burnout or hot dogging in the Park, the Rangers are real strict about speed and that kind of stuff. There is a couple of air strips within 7 to 10 miles, one of which is already set up as a drag strip. The have muscle car races there and I'm sure we could arrange for truck races. They might even set up a mudbog pit, and if we can get a sled, (I think Jason Burton know of one in Spokane) we could possibly have sled pulls.

Like Power Wagon said, Silverwood Theme Park is right there with 3 different roller coasters, and that is also where the drag strip is. It would be a lot of fun, and lots of things to do. Swimming, boating, fishing, hiking, camping, backpacking, hundreds of motorcycle and 4-wheeler trails, and much more.

If you haven't been to the Coeur d'Alene/Sandpoint areas in Idaho, this would be a real treat.

Did you say 4wheeler trails

Count me in. :p What could be better a trip with ridding wheelers and talking trucks. :)

Is this heaven? No it's Idaho :D Oo. :D Oo.

Yeeeeeee Haaaaaaaa:cool:

If you notice, Branson Mo is a lot more centralized in the US, and therefore a lot more people can attend. If this is held in Idaho, you are going to have a regional event. A national event needs to be closer to to everybody. Think about it... Would you be willing to drive to Houston or South Padre for an event? Its only 1800 miles one way.

Why not make Muncie the national event ?

Not to be insulting, but who in thier right mind would WANT to go to Branson or Houston in the middle of the summer?

It's HOT, man :)

I made a suggestion only, if someone has other places in mind, we'd all like to hear of them. Besides, the Canadians would probably appreciate it if we weren't too far south of them.

The weather at Farragut during mid summer is 85-90, perhaps a bit warmer during the day, 60 or so at night, and humidity around 20% to 30%. It is very nice for summer outdoor activities. I've been to stuff in the summer down south, and it's just miserable for outdoor activities in a lot of areas because of the intense heat or humidity.

It's why I suggested a family vacation type event where I did. There are some good weather places in Colorado, I'm sure, where it's not too hot, but anything east or south of there is killer heat for having fun out of doors. A whole lot of TDR members are over 55, a lot of retirees, as well. Not a good idea to go where it's too hot, for that reason, as well. If anyone has more places in mind, suggest them.

I went to an international camporee in Oshkosh, WI in August of 99. There were 25,000 people plus there, and the organizers struggled to deal with dehydration and heat exhaustion due to the humidity constantly. We had a hugely diverse group, but only a few clubs there seemed at ease with the summer heat.

Of course, the logistics were good for an international event in Oshkosh, because Chicago was a port of entry, and it was just 5 hours away. And the space was good. Surveys of the campers put the heat and water as the top "bad" characteristics of the place. But the next one will still be there.

I guess I'm trying to make the point that location isn't the only factor. I know, for instance, that a lot of people do go to May Madness in Nevada. If you're coming from Texas, Idaho would be another day on the road. If you're coming from... Indiana or Pennsy, it's the same distance.

I decided to find the distances...

To Idaho:

Houston, TX, 2200 miles

Muncie, IN, 2000 miles

Nashville, TN 2100

Denver, CO 1080

Detroit, MI 2060

Columbia, SC 2580

Marlborough, CT 2680

To Pahrump:

Denver, 810

Nashville 1840

Muncie 1960

Houston 1520

Detroit 2080

Columbia 2230

Marlborough 2700

Hey, just thinkin out loud... I like the idea... and some of hte NW people have already liked it enough someone has suggested we host an independent event there, with anyone and everyone invited :D

Lets not forget about us easterners ;)

My vote is for the Colorado area. Oo.

No Humidity. Centrally located. and Tons of things to do as well as tons of places to hold the event and Camp.

Hey it's only a 30 hour drive for me so I'm not trying to be biased here :D

let's see...

You to Fort Collins, CO is 1900 miles

to Idaho is 2680

Of course, if you make it some place really NEAT like Silverton, CO...

it's 2250. Of course some people will NOT want to go there (although I would love to) due to the sweat and tight knuckle inducing roads to get there, especially with an RV. And some won't deal well with the 10,000 feet elevations, either :(

Another possibility is the Black Hills of South Dakota. Summer's not TOO hot, and there are things to do and large campgrounds there. Even a flintstones theme park, for the younger or younger thinking bunch. I spent a day wandering around the Black Hills in 99, and would like to go back to see some of the stuff I missed. And of course, everyone should see Mount Rushmore at least once.

annual event

a suggestion was the black hills. just avoid the black hills motorcycle classic also called sturgis rally and races. dates are Aug. 5 -11 2002 and aug. 4-10 2003. that would be a real congested time for camping bruce

Tell me about it! I drove through there right smack in the middle of it.

Quite an experience, but I'd prefer to have missed it... The drive, that is. Would have been far more fun if we could have stopped to look :(

I can understand you not wanting to sweat, and I think it would be nice if you had a regional event in the NW like we had in Kerrville Tx last year. It was GREAT!! The LSTDR guys are great about making these events happen. I agree that Mo. is a nasty place to be in the summer. They have more humidity than Houston.

I wish you all the best in making a regional event in the NW, but I hope you dont call this a National event since its unreasonable to drive 5000 miles round trip for a weekend rally. If I go to Idaho, I want it to be in the winter so I can go skiing.

Do you have a breakdown of the members and where we live? Is it possible to look at the states where we live and select a location near the majority of the members? I am willing to bet that Texas has more members than Canada.

I like this idea, but the fact is that not everyone is willing to drive here. I think a NW rally is in order. I think we have the ball rolling on Houston, we have one in Indiana, Las Vegas, now for the NW.

More people will be able to attend each event without having to take too much time from work to attend. Then convincing the significant other to spend their vacation time looking at diesel trucks. We'll leave the nationals to Cummins.

I like the idea of a National event! But (always one of these) ID is too far of a drive from the East coast. I feel like we should work towards a more centralized location. I really don't have a location in mind but if we could keep it towards the middle of the USA then it will draw more participants. I love ID and CO but its too far from the East Coast for a weekend event.

1st annual Dodge Diesel National Rally

I started this thread, Wow what a response, lots of good ideas, Some things to think about----Someone to contact Dodge , & getting them to sponsor these events, its nothing new for them , thay sponsor the Jeep rallys, P T crusers , & so on, it would improve their business. ------The other rallys like this, move their rallys around every so ofton to be fair to everyone . ----- If you are wanting every one that has a Dodge Diesel to have a chance to get involved , someone would have to research all states & countries to compile a Dodge Diesel ownership mailing list. --Dodge would include info on the dodge clubs for new owners. ---What about posting this idea on all areas of this web site --- Thanks to all for posting their ideas,-- Later--- Jim Weed
