hello all!!!!!

question: i brought a 07 dually with 6. 7 diesel 4 wheel drive with 100,000 miles on it. diesel fuel is expensive with that being said will it hurt my truck to burn red diesel/off road in it??? please give me concrete reasons why this is a bad idea or not. what will it do to the fuel system?

thanks:

If you are a farmer it should not be a problem, unless the sulphur content is not low enough for the 07 engine. My signature truck can burn it, although I am not a farmer and won't risk the chance I'd get caught. You would have to understand my propensity for bad luck to know why it is not a good idea for me. Sooner or later one of the farmers on TDR will come on and give you a better handle on this question. I feel sure several if not all, run it in their trucks.

I buy off-road red dyed diesel in bulk for my Kubota tractor and Kubota RTV. According to the Bill of Lading, the description is the same as on-road diesel except for the addition of red dye.

I DO NOT use it in my truck. The tax savings isn't worth the risk!

What is the sulphur content in Red?

From the Invoice/Bill of Lading on my last bulk purchase of off-road red diesel fuel:

"Fuel Oil/Diesel, 3, NA1993, PG III, Ultra-Low Sulphur-Dyed"

For on-highway use fuel:

"Fuel Oil/Diesel, 3, NA1993, PG III, Ultra-Low Sulphur-Undyed"

New off road equipment made from january 2012 and up have DPF's and use DEF depending on the horsepower. So all off road diesel is now 15 ppm sulfer content. So yes you can run it as far as the engine and DPF are concerned. Legally no. I have never had my tank checked, but have seen checkpionts at sale barns and such. I will not run it, there are way too many DOT running around my area.

Please note that no. 2 heating oil is also dyed red. I use it in my off road construction equipment. It would probably be ok in my 01 ctd, but I would not use it because of DOT enforcement ( a local street cleaning business got popped for red dyed a couple years ago. . the fine and penalties came to over 1 million $). It was a large company. However heating oil is still high sulphur, not for use in late model trucks.
