Mike,

Welcome aboard. I really enjoyed reading your article as I was planning on doing some comparisons myself. In all honesty, I'm buying the Dodge for a variety of reasons (most of which you did not include in your testing).

One of the issues I was struggling with (as are others) is to purchase the 4. 10 on the Ram or go with 3. 73's. I think I'm going to go with the 3. 73 now but my question to you is: How differently do you think the Dodge would have performed with 3. 73 instead of the 4. 10's? If you were buying a Ram today, what would you get?

I understand you are not marketing the Ram's here, just looking for an educated opinion.

Thanks again.

Craig

I think it all falls back to how often and how much you're going to tow. If you're going on the heavy side or towing 1x/week+, I wouldn't hesitate to get the 4. 10. Otherwise, go with the 3. 73.

Bottom line - the Ram (and other trucks we drove) is an incredible hauler. I'd certainly be happy to drive one personally.

I'd like to see this same test revisted with 100k miles on the trucks;)

I've owned all of the 3 and rate them as the Cummins far and away the best when you consider towing, weight of load towed, mileage empty and towing, and sure longevity, the Ford would come in 2nd (despite the problems with the 6. 0, I've had good success and the truck is great) and the GM 3rd. The GM ran fine, but we lost an engine at 115k and the the transmission failed at 165k which resulted in a fire (blown coolant lines poured fluid on the top of the engine and turbo - when my driver lifted the hood it provided the air needed to create the fire). Truck burned to the ground and left a bitter taste.

I'd also like to see the test with trucks that have break-in mileage on them :)
