FYI, Cummins went the heavy DPF and cooled EGR route so that they could meet the MY2010 emissions standards in 2007... they will be switching their emissions control systems on the next generation of the 6. 7L... . most likely you'll see urea like the MY2011 Dodge 3500/4500/5500 C&C trucks... I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see compound turbos and some advanced in-cylinder emissions control techniques. Cummins knows what they're doing on the engine design front.

It's still my understanding that part of what is holding the factory power numbers back has more to do with the drivetrain components from the flywheel back than it does the actual engine.

I think you're right about the drivetrain being the limiting factor. Makes me wonder how the Ford is going to handle the 800#/ft. with their little 10-1/2" axle and aluminum driveshaft. One of the reasons Dodge went with the NOX adsorber for 2007 was that the EPA had not given final approval on the use of SCR at that time. They've already gone that way in the CC. As far as the compound turbos go, Ford tried it and we know how that worked out.

I'm not saying Cummins can't make the power, of course Cummins can. All I'm saying is this new motor, IMHO, was a step back for Cummins. The 5. 9 was the best motor around, few would argue that, the 6. 7 doesn't impress me at all. I've owned 2 of them, both gave unacceptable fuel mileage. Also, as pointed out, let's look at the fuel dilution from the constant regen. That can't be good for bearings, and sure isn't good for the environment to dump 3 gallons of waste oil twice as often. Let's also look @ the "carbon footprint" it requires to supply all that extra diesel we have to burn. . .

Cummins used to build an awesome motor, then the 6. 7 came out and they're sitting in the backseat to GM. Can't speak for Ford, never owned one.

I also bet the 2011 or 12 will have urea and some big HP #'s. They won't do twins, no need to with the new VGT's, the HP won't be that high. =)

I read someplace that pickuptrucks.com in presently doing a report on all 3 trucks, and it should be out in a couple more weeks or so, I would hope it is conducted fair, I have an interest on how all 3 do,

Just saw a link in the DTF to a Pickups.com article about a road test of the new 6. 6 Duramax- regular cab 8'bed- 0-60 in 5. 85 seconds. The horsepower race continues.

Its not the engine, its the EPA, and all makes have issues to include big rigs. We (the people) voted these idiots (not me) into office and never looked back. My 6. 7 has been flawless and pulls the grades as well as my old 2500 look at sig, its the emissions that $%^ me off.

As it stands, I run out of TRUCK long before I run out of ENGINE!... Anything else is just bonus. If the extra is costing me MPG, then its not bonus, its bone-us!!. . I don't like bone-us!

The Dodge rep at the National Finals Rodeo, Las Vegas 2009, told that they have intentions of adding Urea to the 2013 models.

Yup, my point entirely, the EPA has forced Cummins to reduce emissions, I feel Cummins took the wrong route by not using DEF, which in turn is hurting their fuel mileage and HP numbers.

I have no complaints about the "route" Cummins chose. As a matter of fact I have a lot of confidence in the products manufactured by Cummins. I trust their judgement. I don't pretend to know more than the Cummins engineers who designed and built my engine and emission system.

My truck has performed in a totally satisfactory way. I only wish the tree huggers at the EPA had not mandated the ridiculously low levels of emissions.

This has been debate since the big three came into being.

The way I look at it I purchased my truck for the engine first, second the 4th gen units are legaues ahead of the 3rd gen trucks. Each one Dodge, Ford, GM has pro's and con's we the buyers have to figure out which ones we can live with for 5 plus years and than put the money down and enjoy what you just purchased.

The bottom line is that if it works and you are happy thats it.

Well, said! Mine doesn't work and I'm not happy, so I ordered a GMC Dually Crew Cab Denali. Maybe I just happened to get a couple of "monday morning" Dodges, who knows? I've never been unhappy with any of my Duramaxes, my last two Dodges really let me down, so I'm switching back.

I LOVE the interior of '10 Dodge, I'm tempted to take the motor outta my '02 and put it in the new one, LOL

What am I doing over here... ... ... ..... I love my 06!

I plan to be buried in mine... ... ... . years from now... I hope! :-laf

Oh yeah..... SCREW THE EPA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Make sure you buy extra coolant and injecters when you buy the DEF for your DMAX. I drove a 05 3500 D/A and what a dog compared to my 04. 5 CTD 2500. They haven't cured the running hot issue, just increased the capacity.

*Shrug. Not sure what you mean about the running hot issue. I owned an '08 Duramax for two years, towed heavy, had it turned up, never ever had an overheating problem. Never had a problem with my '03 or '04 Duramax either.

The first Gen Dmax did have some injector issues. But they didn't fail nearly as often as the Cummins Lift Pump.

Do a search on over heating on the GM's it's was a problem about 5 years ago most likely it has be fixed.

The overheating issue was the reason for lots of lawsuits and buybacks by Government Motors.

Two or three years ago I posted a Youtube video made by a Duradud owner about his problem and GM's inablility to correct it. He was pulling a trailer with a box truck like a U-Haul on a flatbed car trailer in summer weather eastbound on I-10 in TX trying to pass an ordinary old Ram 12 valve pulling a modest sized fifth wheel on the hills. His video showed the instrumentation and overheating as the old Dodge outpulled him on the grades. The owner was documenting his problem, apparently in support of a lawsuit against GM.

It's in an old thread here.

The injector problems are still ongoing with Duraduds last I heard. GM extended the injector warranty to 200k miles IIRC but has never fixed the cause.

A man should make his own choices of what to buy and drive. Makes no difference to me. My dollars have been and will continue to be spent on Cummins-powered Dodge Rams.
