JReeves : I stand corrected on the Turbo III and Turbo IV. Of course, 13 years since purchase, 3 RAM pickups, and one sweet little 20 month old daughter by the name of Lexi can cloud one's memory ! Nice stable of MOPARS at your home, too !

jdecampo : Me being a hillbilly personally, I thought you should know it's "hillbilly", not "Hill Billy" :-{}

Greg; hillbilly in KY, sans 4 wheel steering, glad to not be an owner of a sick-point-five... ... .

JDCampo is a chevy lover anyway. I believe the 4 wheel steering is disabled above 20 mph anyway so much for emergency lane changes on the highway.

Bill, The 4 wheel steering works at all speeds, below 40mph the wheels turn oposite and above they turn the same. As far as being a GM lover, what's your point?

Greg, being you are a true hillbilly, who told you the correct spelling?

jdecampo... ... maybe I forgot to mention that I'm an educated hillbilly. And, by the way, "benifit" is spelled "benefit" and "oposite" is spelled "opposite"... ... . I didn't want to make you look any less educated than you already are, but I guess I can now take this opportunity to do so. Maybe all that unburned diesel exhaust from your sick-point-five is affecting what remaining brain cells you may have... ... . :-{} By the way, I didn't even need to use the spell checker for basic words like benefit or opposite, but I doubt you would even know anything about a spell checker... ...

I think I'm non-biased on the 4 wheel steering. For one I can afford any new truck so it doesn't really matter to me. The 4x magazine did mention a switch on the dash that enabled you to disable the 4 wheel steering. I thought that was a good idea.

My concern was how the steering would act while flying down a dirt road at 60mph and sliding around a sharp corner. Is the truck going to think I'm doing a lane change and drive right off the side of the road.

I guess it doesn't really matter though since I can't afford it, and when I'm able to I'll probably not be dumb enough to try.

And just a comment in general for the forums. Who cares about spelling, and proper grammar. Give me a break. If you can understand what they're saying quit complaining.

85 6. 9, I think a test drive is in order for the powerslide in the dirt test.

Now the spelling, what does it have to do with 4 wheel steering, I don't know. I guess when your point can't be made, or you don't have one, pick on something else.

After owning a Chevy and having to put up with its horrible turning radius I can see why GM had to come up with some thing to help out their trucks.

After switching over to a Dodge I couldn't believe how much tighter they turn; Even my die hard Chevy buddies are impressed.

I don't think that the GM's have the variable turbo for the 03's?

Ummm your school teachers would give a crap. Apparently they failed... ;) Most of the time spelling and grammar mistakes can be read past, but every once in awhile there's that one post that no one can figure out... But yeah it's to the point of nit-picking, besides everyone knows Mopar is the best... :D :D

for $4500 dollars, they can keep that steering system!

i take another diesel crate engine for my dakota for that much

Tom

$4500 is alot, maybe it will come down some. $2000 would be more like it. I would love it for plowing and backing a trailer at a camp site.

Breck, What Chevy did you have? I know the older 1/2 and light 3/4 tons had a bad turning radius where the heavy 3/4 and 1 tons were better. I have driven the Ford and Dodge and didn't notice any better turning with any of them.

With all the suspension componenets that go bad over the years on any make, I can't imagine having another whole set to worry about. Thanks but no thanks.

Human nature sure can be amusing... ;) :D

"Hydro-formed" frames were a joke when GM came out with them - but are GREAT when our beloved Dodges got them... ;)

"Quiet" diesel was a knee-slapper when GM and Ford was working to bring them out - and WE called their buyers and owners "sissies" who didn't really appreciate what "real trucks" are all about... THEN DC brought out THEIR "quiet diesels" - and guess what... They are now the greatest thing since sliced bread...

NOW we are hearing how UNdesireable 4-wheel steering and variable-pitch turbos are - I can hardly WAIT to hear the song change whan DC brings THEIRS out... :p ;) :D

I stopped at the local G. M. dealer and looked at a denali... $44,000:--) :--) :--) . They can take their 4 wheel steering and shove it. I can get a loaded 03 dually for less than that and have a hell of alot more truck:rolleyes: ... Doug

Ironically, we had an '85 CHEV 3500 4 door 8 foot bed DRW at our shop for replacement of some front end parts. The service manager asked me to take it for a test drive to see how it performed after the repairs. A 40 acre field is needed to turn one of those things around ! The steering wheel went 1. 5 turns from center to left lock and 2 turns from center to right lock. ALL trucks have come a long way since the '80's.

First of all, rear wheel steering is for people who can't park a truck anyway!! Variable this variable that, who cares. The cummins is the real thing. Simplicity counts, try seeing anything under a Ford hood-it's all plastic.

Cummins is the real deal, all the rest are posers.

PASS on the sports car traits. Real trucks, real traits. The next thing you know you attempt to overtake/pass a Chevy and the guy/gal in the left seat with bun heaters on high will be in the "takin' a nap" mode. The only thing the rear steering will get him/her is a quick trip to the other lane or in the ditch. ;)

Rattle on

jd,

81 4x4 heavy half-ok turning

88 4x4 3/4 - pathetic turning

89 4x4 3/4- same as aforementioned

Several friends with 4x4 chevy's, ranging from 88-98 and they all have a hard time turning in anything short of a country mile.

My father's 03 HD and friends 01 and 02 HD's are better but still not as tight as my Dodge.

I am pretty sure the reason for GM's not to turning as tight is the engineers don't want the protective CV boots "rubbing" that much; If I remember correctly on what my uncle had to say about it. (engineer for front half shaft assemblies)

by the way, chevys HD frames are 1/2 hydroformed, and 1/2 stamped steel, ram = all hydroformed.

which would you want when the going gets tough

4 wheel alignment

All this talk about who can park where and the cost of parts, I have not seen any thing about trying to aligning the silly things. I would have to imagine that they will be a nightmare to do. I can't wait to see the long term effects on the drivetrain and the owner's wallets. I predict that chevy will drop the 4 wheel steering system just like the 6. 2 and the 6. 5:D. As far as the parking goes, I think that if you can't park it you shouldn't drive it:{ . There are many days where I will park at the end of the Walmart parking lot just to stay away from the morons who take pride in smashing your doors. :p
