What Is The Hardest Working Part Of A Diesel Engine?

someone with more issues than brains

Wayne, just curious? What is your definition of quality and how are you applying it?? Fit and finish? Materials? Performance? Design? Comfort? Functionality? Bang for the buck? Complexity or lack of? Ease of maintenance? etc?

PitBull,

You are very correct when you say Quality is in the eye of the beholder.

I base my comment on Fit & Finish, Design, Functionality, Comfort,

and ease of maintenance.

In my opinion, this new 03' truck is better than the 1st or 2nd gen trucks in these areas that I have mentioned, and it is certainly much quieter, although I didn't mind the noise of the other two trucks that I owned.

IFS:( i was looking for an 02 and then i test drive an 03 there is no comparison. i swear this is an unbiased opinion b/c i wanted an 02 but as soon as i sat in the 03 and test drove it it was like no other truck i have ever owned. two chevies and now 2 dodges this should be the best truck i have ever owned. i had lots of problems with all my trucks i have owned but alot has to do with the driver. it seems that the chevy hd crowd baby there trucks and people who buy the cummins work the dog pee out of them. dodge is a work hoss. the dodge part was always the worse part of the ctd and dodge combo but with the 03 it seems that the germans have done there part with the dodge body. that is right who do you think puts there seal of approval on all new dodge truck designs yes the germans. Germany is know around the world for producing some of the best mechanical engineers in the world. why do you think we had such a hard time kicking their a@! in WWII. but now they are our friend... i think... . ?

In 1996 when I bought my dodge I bought it strictly because of the engine. I thought Dodge had the best engine while ford had the best truck. 110,000 miles later I think Dodge builds one heck of a truck. NO shakes rattles or wind noise whatsoever. 3 trackbars, transfer case seal, wiper motor, heater cord, most all moving parts up front (tie rod ends tie rod etc. ) front axle U joints, throttle cable. I think that is about it. Oh yea, lip seals in the transmission. I plan on taking it to 200,000 miles then buying new. maybe even wait for 4th gen. Maybe I'll just wait for one of those newfangled hydrogen powered vehicles George was talking about the other night.

although I never bought a new truck,I prefer the cummins if for no other reason than accessability. anything I have I have to work on. a inline engine is always better. that's also why I wanted a 1st gen truck, just pop the hood and it's all right there. while it seems most manufacturerers are trying to make access impossible no matter what the brand, I have always found that ford was the best at hiding the engine!!!. pop the hood on a new powerstroke and feast your eyes on a true mechanics nightmare.
