If any of you people out there have a banging noise you can't find try going to a spring shop and have the helper springs de-arched by about 2 inches. It took me quite awhile to figure my noise problem out. The helpers were hitting the bumpers creating a noise that sounded like it came from multiple locations along the under carriage. Noise free at last. Worcester,Ma

i have a noise sounds like a balljoint (CLUNK) but sounds like its coming from the power steering gear box ,any sugestions all appreciated THANKS.

well to complete my reply i am new at this computer stuff the noise i am hearing does sound like a broken balljoint but sure sounds like its coming from the gear box thanks for the info. 2004 quad 4x4 3500 ,410gears quadzillq 65hp add on.:confused:

it clunks while still and moving only while turning ,i only hear it while forward or reverse in 2 wheel drive moving slow. i will raise the front with engine off maybe i will hear it better. it was difficult to really pin point the noise with the diesel runing.

yes i can just sitting in my driveway turning left or right,or backing or driving forward slow. i still did not left the front end up with engine not running yet. it gets dark at 5:00 and i would like to find the problem in daylight hours. if there isa crack in the frame i want to be able to see it clearly. i weld fo a living an repairs i have made on metal it sure makes a familiar sound but i still dont know yet. i remember the first generation had this gear box frame cracking right?

Sorry about the late reply on the banging noise I had but,the noise would occurr

when the truck was going into a driveway, also a dip in the road, was worse when a load was in the bed. it would also happen when going over a rough road surface. Hope this helps you,Roger M

I've never noticed it on mine. My overloads are about 2" from contact when empty and about making contact when I hook up the 5er. I can't imagine the springs traveling 2" when I'm empty.

We put a 3/16" wall x 2" square tube block at each bumper so that the springs would actually start to function sooner... What bothers me with the 5500 is that is not enough and were working on adding air bags...

Klenger,my rig drove me nuts until a smart spring guy realized what it was

My 97 2500 HD was the same way. I had a heavy 500# shell on it. It lowered it just enough that the overloads came into contact with the bump stops while on bumpy roads, speed bumps, etc. After I figured out what it was, I just ignored it. I put KORE Pace on it and all was well in the world!
