I just read an article in a trucking magazine that showed Dodge Ram had a 44% market share in sales,It was for a few months this year I believe. Ford was second and chevy was last. Looks like Dodge is cleaning house in sales! Chevy was real low on the pole which surprised me.

I found a link which is dead, but it was sales growth:

Feb 01, 2012
DETROIT FREE PRESS

'' We started the new year with a bang by growing sales 44%,'' said Reid Bigland, head of the Dodge brand and U. S. Sales. '' In January we continued building on the sales...

Raising sales by 44 percent does not mean 44 percent market share.

That's right, that number is a long way from market share but I will buy into the fact that they are gaining ground as time goes on.

4th Gen Gassers are everywhere up here, I think that Ram got the combo of looks and interior comfort right this time.

If Government Motors doesn't freshen up the offerings pretty quick, they will be dead last before long.

This area was GM's domain until the bailout. The consumers up here will tell you one of two things lately... ... .....

(1) "I'm buying a Ford, they didn't take a bailout".

(2) "I'm buying a Dodge, those trucks have come a long ways".

Mike. :)

To put that 44% increase in sales into perspective, we'll need to see the actual numbers and dates. 44% gain from where and from how long ago?

The Ram marketing department probably has the month by month results as recently as the second quarter of 2012 or later and I'll bet the information has been shared with the dealer principals also. In the truck business we received the results monthly showing sales numbers, per cent of increase/decrease in volume, the market share in our trade area, and the market share of our competetiors. This information was used by the manufacturer for discounts, special deals, spiffs, and setting sales quotas. It's probabl;y much the same in the car and light duty truck business, but with a lot more pressure.

As a former sales manager at our dealership, I don't miss that part of the business at all. We've had some very shall we say vigorous discussions with the manufacturer's reps over these figures.

No doubt that Ram's share is increasing, espescially in the light duty segment. The other choice is the over-complicated Ford, which is still a nice truck, or the decontented Chevy with its rear drum brakes.

In my area I see LOADS of 1500's. They are very popular. Another thing I see is the tow truck guys are moving over to Dodge 45-5500's which is cool to for me to see. A C&C with a wrecker body is a good looking truck. The other trend I notice is some of the contractors and landscapers who are sticking with Ford SD are going back to gas. Ditto with van based mini bus school buses. I don't think anyone makes a diesel van anymore. I believe Dodge has really boosted it's share.

Chevy still offers the Duramax in the van, a $12,000 option. Perhaps that's why you don't see too many. I can also see the point of a gas SD for short run use. It's a lot cheaper, easier to maintain, and there is of course the cheaper fuel.

Another factor to consider in the sales arena is discounts, right? I still see $10k+ discounts daily on Rams, but rarely see big discounts on the 'others'.

On a side note: How's the Ford Scorpion 6. 7L V8 diesel doing now that it's been in service for a couple years? I don't follow the industry, but I thought the move to an in-house design was smart after the 6. 0 and 6. 4 issues!

We have some in vocational duties. Welding, bucket, utility trucks. They seem to be ok. Its even more scary looking under the hood than the 6. 4.

On a trip through the Appalachians, we stopped at a "Food Lion" (yesterday) in Dawsonville, GA. I ran inside to get stocked up on some food items before we headed up the hill to Amicalola Falls State Park.

I left the truck idling with the AC on and the wife and dog chillin in the car.

I got a text from the wifey saying that I better get out there and answer some questions before a crowd forms. Well, Dawsonville is a small town and everyone knows everyone and the vehicle they drive. A couple of country bumpkins had motioned to the wifey that they wanteed to talk to her and she should roll down her window. They complemented her on the truck and started asking her how much torque/HP the truck has. They tried getting more info out of her, but she really didn't have the info they were asking. They walked around it and admired it for a few mins. She told them they were asking the wrong person about how much power and torque the truck has, but that we did tow with it a lot. At the time, we weren't hooked up to anything.

They were gone when I got out with the groceries, but I thought it was a funny story.

This might be the wrong thread for this, but thought I would share the funny story. These guys said "We like your Diesel" But they didn't indicate that they were fans of any particular brand.

I really think the sound of the idling Cummins is what caught their attention. It is the sound of a healthy Diesel.
