Here's an Interesting Duramax Thread

Real World Test from Chevy Forum

I thank everyone for their replies to my post. It seems that the paint, the lift pump and the steering are major concerns. I own a 2000 Powerstroke(yes with the CACKLE) and it is not perfect(what is), but I have to admit the paint at 50,700 miles still looks great and the steering is fine. My complaints are That I've had 3 pinion seals replaced, the drivers seat vinyl is starting to crack. I admit I like the Ram look but quality issues kept me from buying one. I think all American cars and trucks should be made here not in Mexico. I like the inline six motor and the sound. I'm not crazy about dealer service either. The Duramax is a nice design but the diesel itself is not worth buying in my opinion. Aluminum heads worry me. Dodge quality should be better with the number of people buying the ram with the Cummins diesel.

Is the steering on the Ram different than the Fords. They both have a solid front end yet the Dodge steering wonders. I hope the new Ram is better in all areas that people have been complaining about which include paint, steering and quality. Joe

JAddiego,

For every paint trouble you read about there are hundreds of Rams out there that aren't having problems, the same goes for the steering, and lift pump, etc.

Chuck the Cackle, and let the Hummin Cummins move 'ya ;)Oo. :D

Just beware of the "Dark Side". ie BOMBitis

Ram mirrors should have a disclaimer... . "Objects in the mirror just keep getting smaller, and smaller... ... ... . and smaller, and smaller

I personally wouldnt own an American-built Ram. Both that Ive owned are Mexican and other than water leaks around the rear window, I cant fault them; no steering problems, no lift pump problems, no paint problems. I agree with you that NONE are perfect. However, given the choices we have between only 3 brands that offer diesel powered pickups, there is only ONE choice: the one with the straight 6 motor. The trucking-style of motor! No matter how good or how awful the DM or Strokers are, they just aren't a consideration as long as they're using V-8s. Those who own them for the motor, "just dont get it"... now, if you buy them cause you need 4 REAL doors... that, I can understand. ARE YOU LISTENING, DC????

Mine has 42K miles on it and it sits outside (to big to fit in the garage). It is Black and the paint looks like new. Only repair was a track bar at 35K miles under warranty. Drives great no problems. It was made in St. Louis Missouri in November of 1999, no leaks no squeals no rattles. I am very impressed with the quality of this truck. I am also accustom to owning high quality vehicles (example Lexus LS 400, Acura NSX to name a couple) Go buy the truck you want. Since you had the bad luck of getting one of the PSD's with cackle, maybe your luck will change and you will get a perfect Dodge CTD. Their all good trucks, sometimes sh*t happens. :)

I think...

it's a shame that the comments by a select minority on this site would sway someone from buying our truck. The wandering problem that occurred on some trucks has long ago been solved.

I have not encountered a paint problem in our shop, ever. The lift pump was a weak point untill the latest up-grade, and seems to have been solved.

There is no better designed and manufactured diesel engine available in an American pickup truck, and looking at any 1994 vintage pickup truck as regards overall appearance, driveability and value, I don't think the Dodge can be beat.

I have a 94' Dodge CTD with 139,000 miles. NO problems with paint, steering, lift pump, etc, I have upgraded the trans and TC with the DTT setup and done a little upgrade on the power. Every time I get in and start driving is a real pleasure!
