This morning they said it was for "unwanted acceration of the engine"

NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number : 03V033000 Recall Date : FEB 04, 2003

Component: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

Potential Number Of Units Affected : 19500

Summary:

CERTAIN PICKUP TRUCKS, EQUIPPED WITH CUMMINS DIESEL ENGINES AND MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS, MAY EXPERIENCE AN ELEVATED IDLE SPEED AFTER EXTENDED CRUISE CONTROL USE.

Consequence:

THIS CAN RESULT IN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION AND A REDUCTION IN BRAKING EFFECTIVENESS, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Remedy:

DEALERS WILL REPROGRAM THE SOFTWARE IN THE CUMMINS ENGINE CONTROLLER. OWNER NOTIFICATION IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING MARCH 2003. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT DAIMLERCHRYSLER AT 1-800-853-1403.

Brian, overall, I like the new 03. Give me a few more months, and I'll like it even more, once it's up to what my 2000 was.

It works very well. The quiet grows on you, a little.

Hmmm...

My '99 started acting funny with the cruise the other day. I had my foot on the throttle at 55mph, turned the cruise on and pressed set. Immediately accelerated to about 65mph and stayed there. Has done it several more times... you have to work at it to get it to set where you originally want it. I wonder if this is what the recall is dealing with... I have heard that this may effect some of the 2nd gen trucks as well.

The throttle in mine seems to have a mind of its own. Learning to let off the go pedal, pause, THEN push the clutch or it revs up a bit. I don't coast at all so the clutch is always out unless I'm shifting. A couple times at low speed (parking lots, driveway, etc. )it has surged a little and given me a little wakeup call. Got to do something about that. Don't need 2 trucks in the shop at once.

It has happened to me. I was pulling my trailer (about 12,000#) and had been using the cruise control for hours. When I got off the interstate the engine wouldn't return to idle. Had a few scary moments trying to stop 20,000# while the engine was still pulling. With the clutch pushed in it would race past red line! A short time later it cured itself and the dealer couldn't find anything wrong.

I'm ready to get this recall taken care of. I definitely do not want to repeat that experence.
