Here's a really Obsessive-Compulsive gauge question!

As reported in the 4Wheel& Off Road magazine, Dec04 issue, Dodge will get new 6-speeds for it line-up of trucks and jeeps. For us the the NV5600 is to be replaced by the Getrag G56 6-speed. It has a lower 1st gear a 6. 29:1 instead of the older 5. 63:1 in the 5600. Looks to be a very beefy unit.

I recently read an '05 brochure and spoke with a diesel tech at a dealer and both (the brochure and the technician) said the getrag is only going into the 'power wagon'. The NV5600 is supposed to be around for a little longer with the cummins trucks.

Can anyone confirm this for 100% certain?

I can confirm that is wrong. After Jan 1, all 2500's will get the G56 Getrag. The dealer wasn't sure, but after I put my order in he said it would be here earlier than we thought because they were cranking out 6 speeds to get rid of their NV 5600 inventory.

I am happy with my NV5600. It is tested and known. My '92 had a 5 speed getrag and it sure seemed light for the application and the pulling I did with the truck. Busted the synchros out when the rear end blew... yeah, I was overloaded and doing something I should not be using a 1 ton for. Right at 30,000# Gross. Not bad for a measly stock 5. 9 Cummins. :D Yeah, she would hammer 65mph up the hills at 30,000 gross too! :D

Not only did Dodge switch from the 3. 55 to the 3. 73 rear-end, now the 6th gear ratio of this new Getrag manual is 0. 79 compared to 0. 73 for the NV5600. Let's keep that 6th gear engine RPM moving up! Glad I have the NV5600.

The taller factory tires mostly negate what you're saying.

My truck ith 3. 54s gives 2K rpm at 72mph.

A new 6-speed truck with 3. 73s gives 2K rpm at 72mph.

I'd guess that the shorter gearing of the new transmission is go enhance towing in OD (no need to downshift), and to enhance towing by having the ratios closer.

I'll take the NV5600. With all the Cummins grunt, taller gears are good.

Was just cuious but where does that leave us guys with earlier model trucks with the ill fated 47re that is surely going to be dust as higher mileage is achevied, was just wondering on that one, i have an auto thats pushing 94000 miles

So who needs a lower first gear than what's in the NV5600?

Certainly not me!

I can think of a ton of people. That gear comes in very handy when towing... heck I use it most of the time unloaded anyway.

Amen on the lower reverse. I would not mind a lower first, but it definitely is not a must. The rest of the drivetrain will break before the NV5600 and the engine. I wish they would get rid of the AA axles and keep the NV5600!

So are you saying that first gear in the NV5600 is not low enough even when unloaded? You've got to be kidding!

He must have one of them there "california" EPA trucks - gotta have all the help ya can get off the line with one of those, even empty! :D :D :D

'course. My HO seems to do just fine when towing - even in second-gear starts out on the level...
