I recieved my Dodge propaganda mag. today and on pg 18 and 19 they give a little preview of the New 2500/3500 trucks. On their best in class bullet points on page 19 they say best in class "Trailer-towing capability with High-Output Cummins Turbo Deisel engine including five-speed automatic Tansmission"

Is this a typo or are they planning something they have not release up until now?????

I had been told from one 'reliable' source that Dodge was uprating to a load range 8 rather than the current range 7, so this may mean a whole new juicebox??? Currently we have 47RE 4-speed , load range7.

The 5-speed automatic is for the 5. 7L HEMI V8 (545RFE). The Cummins will get the new 48RE 4-speed automatic that will be able to handle the HO's 305/555 rating.

There's a thread on this subject already in this conference.

This is what is said on page 19... .

"Trailer-towing capability with High-Output Cummins Turbo Diesel engine including five-speed automatic transmission"

I think they are talking about the Cummins package...

At least that is the way I read it.

I read the other posts and I also read the Motor Trend article that told the of the five speed. I dismissed both of them because all "good" info has pointed to the 48RE. THAT is not what the Dodge printed magizine is now saying. I'm not saying that it is correct, but I would bet they have had every marketing person and a gaggle of lawyers proof read the copy for factual errors. If they get it wrong, which source can you trust. We do know that everyone is entitled to mistakes. (look at the lift pump and track bar design)

Yep, I saw it too. I think it's a typo... . or maybe a surprise? I kinda doubt it. There's been too much noise about the 48RE with the HO Cummins.

Hey, GM has a 5 speed automatic and Ford has one on the way..... how about it D/C?

5 speed auto

I saw the Dodge brochure yesterday with the statement quoted above about Cummins and 5 speed auto. The dealer looked in his order/specification data and the 5 speed auto mentioned was only for the new V8 Hemi. It appears to be an error in brochure by marketing folks. If fact, it is the same 5 speed auto that is available in the Jeep Grand Cherokee and not for heavy duty towing.

Have you seen the #'s for the Hemi:--) I sure hope they beef it up a little to be able to handle the power. Oo. Oo.

Chipstien, the dealer could not find any 2003 towing specifications from Dodge. He hopes to receive more info soon (since sales manager is my son-in-law he will let me know when the additional info is received). It does appear to be the same 5-speed auto used in Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 which I think is rated to tow 7,000 lbs in model year 2002. I also understand it is not a true 5-speed as far as shifting up (4 gears). The 5th speed comes in during downshifting as it used a different 2nd gear than when upshifting?????? Dodge may have beefed up the transmission for the new hemi V8 but if so, the info is not available to dealer yet.
