Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) dodge says injection pump NOT part of powertrain?

A year ago the check engine light was on and the dealer said they think it must be the injection pump. I needed to tow that week and it was running perfect so I took it back home. After a few weeks the light went away; several weeks later it came back on. Since the 5 year warranty was running out I returned to the same dealer. They immediately said that on a diesel, the injection pump is outside of the engine and not part of the powertrain?

The truck is an 02 with only 23k miles.

As I have been working out of town at a location with no cell coverage I have let my wife handle this matter.

If they stick to this policy I will be forced to get a big sticker for my tailgate that says "Dodge warranty sucks big time"

Look in your warranty information booket that is in the owners folder in the glove box. It is the small white book. It is the only true warranty as it states in the booket. The Injection pump is covered as part of the 5/100,000 Cummins Engine Warranty. Dodge claims that warranty begins at the inservice date, but the warranty information booket states that it begins at the end of the 3/36 basic warranty. Read the booket, and go see the dealer. Cycle the key three times leaving it on the third time and write down the codes that show on the odometer display. If you have a 216 code the VP44 is going south.



Only bad think is if they replace the VP44 they most likely will also install their intank lame lift pump also.



FYI, I swapped my VP44 today because of 216 code and two cases of dead peddle.

Thomas, Nice work digging up that post. Unfortunately for me, 99 w/150k+ it's of no benefit. However, it should help out our friend emarsh and others.



emarsh - just remember to kill them with kindness and facts as listed in your owners manual and follow the methods utilized in the links contained within thread #171690. You should help prepare yourself for the pending: "the computer says" comments and get ready to immediately counter with (WTE) "that's very nice don't you just love computers, but my owners manual (contract from Dodge/Cummins) indicates this" as you're handing over copies from your owners manual/warranty booklet. Make sure the person indicates on the service report (be it typed or hand written, if hand written make sure person signs and dates) that you disagree with their rendition of the coverage period as listed in their computer, that you provided them copies of pages from your owners manual as the legal document you were provided when you received the truck, (ensuring they staple copies to their service record and provide you complete copies).



It's obvious that DC realizes they have a "legal" obligation as they issued a "I hope this guy is going to be quiet check" to the member in the link Thomas provided.

My vp was changed by the dealer @80,000 no muss no fuss. Many others here have had same experiance. Is it possible to take it to a different dealer in your area?
