Which company makes the most Diesel Engines?

Battle of the Big 3 !! {funny}

Ss it true? Is the beloved Cummins going by the wayside to allow for German Engineering to take over?

I think their might be some question as to whether or not Dodge is getting heat from Daimler on this since Daimler being part owner or controlling owner might be pushing for the German engine in place of the Cummins, I can't believe they would since the Cummins has been in the dodge truck application for 17yrs. I don't think now is time for change but that could be what all this stir is about... I hope to heck it isn't so, will i be buying a new truck anytime soon, no. . They are to dam expensive when you got thinner paint jobs and the metal well isn't much metal to them... The bed on the 92 i have is 50 times thicker than on the '00 i have, thats awful. . the 92 i can throw wood in the bed and it bounces with no dents, the '00 well lets just say the bed shows its been used for wood hauling and looks like i used a sledge hammer in the bed...

Well this is from a fleet manager when i asked him the questions. So it may cause me to wait. So this could be the end of the CTD.

Well I heard New Years was going to be on a different day next year from the fleet manager of the local dairy queen.

I also heard Cummins was changing their name to Cummings... .

Ford made that decision. :-laf

That is the main reason my '96 looked so crappy when I sold it. You would have thought I had a front end loader dumping 3 ton boulders from 20' into the bed by how it looked. I think they are all that way. It is a shame.

Well folks, I have to ask what the fuss is all about?? Having worked on and owned Benz diesels and medium duty diesels... these are GREAT engines. How many folks here are complaining about the lift pump and all the variuos problems with the Cummins and injections systems. There isn't a day goes by that I read more and more crap about the 24V problems. You don't find that with the folks with the sprinters... and darn that engine is quiet and powerful. Not to mention the Transmission has had fewer problems than the dodge transmission that you have to build up to make it work properly.

Damlier Benz has been engineering Diesels LONG before Cummins came into existence. Don't get me wrong... I like my Cummins with a Dodge wrapped around it, but I like my 2 mercedes (one Diesel with over 500,000 miles on original engine, and one gas with over 225000 miles on original engine) just as much. The bodies are made of much better stuff than dodge ever thought about putting in their stuff.

That being said, I hope they don't discontinue the Cummins, but just be open enough to look at the Benz drivetrains available and revel in the fact that they are every bit as good as Cummins. Hell maybe it will even cause Cummins and Dodge to come up with better fixes fort problems.

just my cents.

I poked around a Sprinter because I have my backpacking partner talked into buying one. My thoughts were that the fancy smancy electronic "tell you what to do and when" system was trouble waiting to happen AND when it does you better have mighty deep pockets because it is going to cost big time.

I see DC going to MB sooner than we expect but I see in the car line up and the 1500 class. I also see the new 07 emission rules ending the wanna be diesel owners (I own a diesel but didn't know it has fuel filter that needs changed too or It takes HOW much oil) out of the market because of increased price and fuel. I know one thing for sure MG and DORF will have a cluster **** of an engine compartment and exhaust system.

I don't think the engine in the Sprinter is any better than a Cummins 5. 9. I know at the Sprinter dealership where my friend works, they have had to hire more techs to keep up with the work. There's not a day that goes by that either a FedEx or UPS Sprinter doesn't come in via tow truck. I know of one guy who bought a new one and tried to drive the 80 mile trip back home. It broke down on the way, the one they loaned him broke down on the way, and his broke down again after they fixed it. I think he got home on the fourth try. :-laf I'm not saying MB can't or doesn't build a fine engine, but the one in the Sprinter is not their best work IMO. It does get great mileage though.

After all, Daimler-Benz built the first diesel truck in 1923 and the first diesel car in 1936, the Mercedes-Benz Type 260D... I would think they know a thing or two about diesel engines :)
