I was at the Chevy dealership today talking with a friend who is a Duramax mechanic. He had to answer a call and it was from the Dodge dealership... the mechanic had a question about the Allison transmission! The Chevy mechanic told me that they had just started using them in the Dodge! :--) and he had been asked several questions (from Dodge mechanics)

When did this happen?? (or more to the point "Did it happen?")

Several people on the Duramax lists have reported seeing the Allison in the new Rams... . where have I been?

No mention of it from any reliable source I've ever seen combined with the fact Dodge is in the process of making their own 5/6 speed means that this is almost 100% certainly not happening.

Gotta call BS on this one! Can't see DC putting the money into an Allison when they are developing their own 6 speed auto.

Dodge could not be using the Alison. I saw a man (hotshot driver)at the Flying J that told me his had the 6 speed Mercedes Auto in it. I did not not even see this when I got my truck. All I saw was the 48RE and the 6 speed.

GM owns Allison. It will NEVER happen.

Really???? I know a guy who until recently was the service manager at a local Furd dealership and he said the Furd 5spd auto was built by Allison. I always told him "BS" followed by a bunch of other words, but I never really knew for sure.

The fact that GM owns Allison does not preclude them from selling to DC. It makes it unlikely but not impossible. The current Allison 1000 series as used in the GM trucks will simply not hold the torque of the Cummins. It barely does the job on the GM trucks. I think that everyone wants to throw around the Allison name. I've owned two Chevys with Allisons, believe me, it isn't something I would brag about.

We've installed many a PacBrake on 5. 9 engines in motorhomes with the Allison World Transmission..... Its a very good marriage... the Allison World Transmission is designed for an exhaust brake... . and interfaces well... .

Its my personal feelings that we'll see a collective effort by D/C to move to a 6 speed automatic that designed for several vehicles... Like the new Chrysler 300 M car it shares part of the platform from one of the Mercedes cars... . This collective effort allows for much larger production numbers and lower costs... . and we know Mercedes builds a very good mid range automatic transmission in Europe for their trucks...

There is nothing forcing them from not selling them, but I'd say that it's a MAJOR selling point for their fullsize pickup trucks. Therefore, they're not going to give that up for the minimal profit on selling the parts when they've got something in their pickups that nobody else has. That's just my opinion though, it's definitely not impossible, just very highly unlikely in my opinion.

Ford does not own Cummins. Not sure if that was a joke or not but that's a deeply rooted myth.

Don't forget Detroit Diesel...

Detroit Diesel was a long time GM division too (now part of DC). With the recent financial woes that GM is going through, it would not surprise me to see more divisions "go away. " But, I too doubt that an Allison transmission will show up in a light DC product as an OEM any time soon. (Freightliner not withstanding. )

Actually, the gas turbine division of Allison has already gone away. It was purchased by Rolls-Royce in the 1990s.

The Allison Transmission in the Chevy. is really not as good as it is made out to be. It is nothing like the ones they use in the Big Rigs. We have a lot of our new Mixers with the 6 speed Allison in them, and we are already having some small problems with them. WILDMAN

Dodge and Allison

A couple months back in one of my RV magazines it said Dodge and Allison were working on a transmission together. It didn't say when it would be out and available.

Rodger Penske bought DD back in the late 80's. He sold it to DC not GM. They were stuck with 2 stroke technology until he came in. They introduced the highly successful 50 and 60 Series engines. The first with electronic controls.

Allison makes several model transmissions. The one in the Chevy is an automotive transimission! It is not the World trans found in the larger class of trucks/motorhomes.
