And if so, what do like or dislike aobut it? I am looking at one for the bed of my new rig, and the ability to lift and get into either end of the bed would be nice. Any advice or opinions are appreciated. Thanks, Sarge
Well I have had two different kinds, AEROCOVER and one by PERAGON. The aerocover had three plastic doors and could be opened from either end. The locking mechanism was pretty cheesy and the rear door came off on the drivers side in a big storm. I liked the cover before that happened. I could take each door off in a couple of minutes by myself when I needed to and the doors did not take up any room from the bed. The Paragon is an accordian style that folds in the front of the bed. There are two rails that are attached underneath the bed rails and when open the cover takes up maybe 10 inches in the front of the bed. There is a frame that is inside the front of the bed that can get in the way also. If you only carry a small amount of plywood say three or four sheets at a time no big deal be cause they can slide underneath the bracket. For larger loads you need to remove the cover which is not as fast and easy as the Aerocover was. On the good side the Paragon allows you to use the stake holes where the Aerocover did not.
I have had the fold-a-cover brand bed cover since the truck was new in '95. I like it. It is lockable and very strong. It can be walked on which I have found to be very handy. I have hauled a few sheets of plywood and other stuff like that on top of it without having to unload the normal junk I have in the bed. On mine the front end of the cover does not lift. Later models may be different. It is easy to fold up and secure. It's pretty easy to remove if I want to haul something that needs the extra room. It does interfere with the stake holes.
Wow, thanks guys. The cover i'm looking at is actually from a company called "advanced cover corporation". It is susposed to be alumimum cover with a foam middle. A guy is coming over tomorrow to show me one he installed on another vehice. The cover is susposed to open on either end as well. The attractive part is I can get it drop shipped for $549. I appreciate your comments and concerns. Thanks, Sarge
I have an Advance Cover on my truck. I like it just fine. But, I did have to do some trimming on the mounting flanges so it would fit between the rails. If you have rail caps, the vertical parts of the flanges will probably have to be trimmed off. The only thing I didn't like about the cover is that the company never responded to my e-mail concerning this problem. "Fold A Cover" appears to be the same thing and they're made in the same town. Don't know what's up with that.
