I'm getting ready to install an Isspro EV pyrometer on my '05 and was wondering where's the best place on the exhaust manifold to install the thermocouple for the most accurate reading?



Does anyone have any PHOTOS of their thermocouple installation that they can post fo me?

Since you are not getting any replies yet, I will show you a pic of my 03 pyro install. I'm not aware of any difference between the 555's and the 600's.

So which is better, pre or post turbo? I've seen both and assumed pre is the temp. that the engine is pumping out and post will read a little cooler but it lets you know what the turbo is dealing with???
 
Depends on who you talk to. Most agree that in a performance application pre is better than post. Lets hope the worms stay in the can on this one. :-{}
 
I drilled/tapped my 02' pyro with turbo on and never had a problem. The exhaust manifold angled differently than my new 05'. Any shavings that fell into the manifold could be caught with a magnet but on the 05' the manifold flange is verticle. I am searching and thought I would add the question to this thread, since there are new posts here, how did you guys drill/tap?
 
I've got two in mine, one in the front three cylinders, one in the back three. Pictures in my readers rigs. The pictures are of an ATS manifold but it's the same concept with yours. Just be aware of the divided throat where it dumps into the turbo... . drill one side or the other if you put it down there.

Hey Scott, two questions. Where do you get the paint for the manifold and does it hold up? Where did you get the fuel pressure isolator? My isolator is shot.

The paint is Por-20 bright aluminum exhaust manifold paint. It has held up well but I should have put it on thicker, it's beginning to rust through now. It's available at many automotive paint supply stores.



I bought the isolator from Dave at Diesel Power Products in Pasco Washington. It's been a few years ago but I assume he still carries them.

Pretty scary photos! What did you do with the filings that fell in the turbo housing when your drill punched the hole?

There are many cans containing those worms posted throughout this site, as well as others. Piers documentation as well as other posts describe some "tricks" to retrieve shavings. I had a magnet (mechanics retrieval tool) I bought when I did my 02' thermosensor. I put heavy grease on the drill bit before punching through. I frequently backed the tap out and cleaned it off with wd40. I got some small fragments with the magnet. As per many posts about this, I kept inserting the magnetic tool until it came out clean. After installation is complete I started the engine and let it run at idle for a couple minutes, no turbo, exhausting rogue fragments out the tailpipe. After letting the engine idle a few minutes I drove it like an old schoolteacher going to the grocery store. As I said, I used this technique on my 02' and never had a problem.

Have done it this way on two CTD's and never had a problem... ;)
 
Me, too, Jeff That's exactly where I put mine. I had no problems with shavings, either. Did just what you did.



FWIW, I had the downtube off to put my Pacbrake in, and I stuck my head in the outlet of the turbo (figuratively, not literally!) and other than some black stuff, the turbo looked great (@40,000 miles).

Wear your safety glasses and drill the hole with the truck idling and the exhaust brake on. No way those shavings will go in there with all that air coming out ;)

Thanks for the pointers. Buddy of mine has installed his in a couple of CTDs aft of the turbo and just figures 200 degrees higher than the reading for the actual temp. He told me that he thought the fins in the turbo were porcelain. Pretty fragile!

Not porcelin, metal. Generally an alloy very similar to inconel. There has been some testing done with ceramics and high temp composits in turbines and compressors but that is really high dollar stuff that you likely will not find in the civillan market.



If you install post turbo figure roughly 10° per pound of boost. 200° is close at 20 psi boost but if he's pushing to the mid thirties it's probably a bigger diffrence than that.
