$1.4+ Million Motor Home

The series 40 is a 4 cylinder engine,The series 60 is a 6 cylinder, 12. 7 liter. Looks like about 2 liters per cylinder.

Yes they do. Guy that owns Herboth's machine shop in Marysville Ca. Has one in an older F350 with an Allison transmission. Came out of a fire truck. Big motor, runs ok . I think it is rated around 230 hp and 530 torque. It is a V8.

If I remember correctly, the Detroit 8. 3 is a "throwaway" V8 in the same vintage and class as the 3208 Cat and the 555 cummins. Guys I know who run older trucks try to avoid them.

Avoid it. Especially if it an electronic governed engine. They also had camshaft problems, ran dirty and were not too powerful.

I see the motor home in question is a "99" model. The ad may have a misprint concerning the power unit. The 40 series, is made by IHC for Detroit. It is a 6-cylinder in line engine. One model is 7. 6 or 466, the other is 8. 7 or 530. It might be one of those. The old V-8 that the guys are talking about was an 8. 1 fuel pincher, kinda junky. I don't think it was used as late as 1999, but I may be wrong. The 50 series Detroit is a 4- cylinder made by Detroit. I think??

Detroit 8.3?

Detroit didn't make an 8. 3 liter, and the series 40 comes in a 7. 6 liter and an 8. 7 liter. The series 40 is a 6 cylinder made by Navistar and utilizing some Detroit technology and marketed by Detroit. Basically it is a DT 466 or a DT 530 with Detroit electronics.

Detroit did make an 8. 2 but it wasn't around in '99 and they weren't much of an engine.

The Series 50 is a 4 cylinder version of the Series 60 engine, it is an 8. 5 liter and uses twin balance shafts to help control the natural vibrations of a 4 cylinder engine.
