Yes I know when engaged the brake makes noise, but the shop where my truck is in for fuel rail code and strange noise coming from driver side they are saying it is the pump for the jake brake. Even when switch is off. I have the new one for 06 by jacobs.

Im not to familiar with the Jacobs but my pac (electric pump vs. belt driven) makes noise when its pumping. You have to really listen to it but it is there. I would say it could be making noise because its pumping all the time, the switch just puts air in the brake cylinder for activation. Just my $. 02.

There is some noise associated with the vacuum pump even when the brake is not engaged, at least there is with mine ;) and it is working properly as far as I know. Once engaged there is a fair amount of hissing air noise from the pump, almost sounds like a leak. I have checked closely and am pretty sure it is normal noise for the pump. The brake works properly so I have accepted the noises as part of the deal.

Thanks for all of the replies, the only service center in my town says the noise I hear while driving under a load is the vacum pump to me it sounds like an old cold diesel(rattle like sound)i also have had code p0191 fuel rail performance sensor. The service guy says that code just happens in these new diesels and then won't come back. I have a feeling i will be going back or else where for service for now i will keep my fingers crossed.
