Does the term Premium Diesel mean anything

When you see Premium Diesel advertised - what is premium anyway? Does it mean a higher Cetane rating, different blend or something without no real "receipe" Any thoughts? And really what I notice is that a station will have ONLY Premium Diesel, there isn't a non-premium available.

hammersley..... We run Cenex Premium most of the time and can tell a difference In mileage and how quiet the engine is running... . But I don't know about the other brands and I have a suspicion that a station with only one pump labeled Premium does not have premium in it.

According to this article it sounds like the definition of premium diesel varies. The only requirement for premium is that it "provides a functional benefit to consumers – a benefit that has been technically demonstrated".

I think you are better off performance and dollar wise to buy regular old straight #2 and add your own additives.

illflem... Cenex premium has more improvements than you can add in additives and costs only 1 cent more per gallon. It is refined for us in Laurel MT and it is not delivered by an Exxon or Texaco tanker.

I think it's up to each franchise to come up with their own definition of what constitutes a "premium" fuel.



I'm with Bill on this. Buy straight ol #2, and run your own addative. I've been using Power service diesel kleen.



About 2 months back, I filled with Amoco premium diesel for 3 or 4 tanks.



As soon as I went back to the usuial fuel for me (#2 fuel oil) I could tell immediately the first time I pulled out in traffic. BIG difference.



The Amoco was also probibally a winter blend.

WyoJim, you're right, it's my understanding the Cenex fuel is one of the few fuels that comes from different sources, but it is harder to find on the road. When at home I use Cenex Ruby exclusively, it's much better than the other options.



PS, you every seen what comes out if you run WyoJim though a spell checker?

Freds TDI Forum has great info too. I think their VW's really respond well to Premium Diesel. Amoco Premiere is their favorite.

Our premium diesel has a little more additive in it. I think that is the norm in the industry. I can give you the injection rates, ect, ect, but it really doesen't make a real difference. The additive package raises cetane levels a touch 1-4 points and in the winter has a flow improver. You might notice the difference in performance.

I have seen premium diesel while on the road. I never thought I needed it as I put the power service additive in every tank. This way I know what is going through the engine.

Ditto what WyoJim said. Cenex has great fuels. They are pretty easy to find in the Dakotas, MN, MT, WY and few states beyond.
