Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Does the turbo need upgraded?

Im not sure in what direction to go now with this truck. The diesel bug has bit me pretty hard. my most recent mod was rv275's with a hypertech max energy, and I am pleased with it along with the other various mods. I can get it up to 25 psi no problem, 30ish is pushing it. I know boost isnt everything, but it just seems like I could do something to make this thing run stronger. It does an awesome job now, but I was wondering if I needed to upgrade my turbo, and if so, to what? Do i Have enough fuel to warrant this? Thanks.

I wouldn't bother with the turbo in your case--that's a lot of money for the relatively little benefit you'd get out of it. How tough is it to take your EGTs above 1300 degrees?

When you rebuilt your transmission was it a stock rebuild, or did you go with someone like ATS or DTT? If it was a stock rebuild you probably don't want to take the power any higher than you already have, or you'll be rebuilding again very soon.

I had the stock one rebuilt, however, the guy that built it is accustomed to building diesel transmissions, esp. for Dodges, I'm not worried about the trans failing. Pulling a 6000# trailer I dont get higher than 1200 degrees pulling steep grades, and empty I dont see over 1000, and thats only when it shifts into od going up a steep grade

Save the money on a turbo. You must have a boost elbow to get it higher than 20. I'd suggest you remove the turbo and drill out the wastegate hole to 7/8. This helps when it is really boosting.

Or just a rusted up wastegate. I can hit 27 psi with no fueling mods.

If you can reach 30psi boost with a stock turbo, you will pretty much maxed out for power. You will get mostly heat when going higher.

If you tow get a turbo..... I melted the number 6 on my 2000 with 275's and an Edge Comp on level two. I was towing and my EGT gauge went bad... . Thought I would be ok... . right up to the point it started making noise!!

I have an adustable boost elbow with the screw turned all the way in. With the programmer set on level 2 and with the other mods, I was pulling 25 lbs pretty easy coming home over mtns on the interstate. The wastegate hole is not drilled out though, as fox was suggesting

I had a 98. 5 with jammer 100's and the edge comp, it comes with a boost elbow, i could hit 35 psi, never had a problem.
