Does your Dodgezilla huff/bark??

Powder Coating

Gauge install, please help...

Drove a friends 01 with a Dodgezilla with 14 housing, no silencer ring. Even under what I would describe as "moderate" acceleratiion the turbo huffed when letting off throttle. For me this was very annoying. Turbo whine is fine, but huffing is something else.

Is this an expected consequence/characteristic of anyone's bomb turbo's?

Would a silencer ring mitigate or eliminate? I'm told Dodgezilla silencer ring option is ~$100, which for me would be worth it to get rid of huffing.

I don't think the silencer ring would have any effect on the huffing. When I went to the HX-40, it took some time to figure out how to let off the go-pedal.

what air filter setup does he have? is it similar to yours? do you have a silencer ring in your truck? if so, you may be surprised what yours sounds like when you remove it... I have a feeling that what you're calling "huffing" isn't actually causing any damage.

Forrest, he has a Scotty with the cowl drilled, so I do conceed this would definetly amplify turbo noise. I have an aFe Mega-cannon and my puny PDR Nasty Nine has no ring. I love the subtle whine it provides, but it doesn't huff or bark. I'm not concerned about damage, it's just annoying as hell. I always thought huffing or barking would be associated with larger turbo's under wot, and no problem under "normal" driving. l

Bob... I'll try to catch you. thanks

fyrescott... I don't know anything about stalling so can't comment. What are the symptoms?

Did Piers use silencer ring on his hybrids turbos ?

When I was running my stock HY I tried to run the turbo with the ring off but the turbo whine was way too obnoxious since with that small of a housing I was running 15 psi boost down the freeway so it was constant. That was anything but subtle. Also, I would bark the poor thing 2 times a day on a good day. Now my HX-50 hybrid on the other hand has only been barked 3 times in a year of owning it.

Does Piers do something to the Nasty that make it less susceptable to barking?:)

My PDR Hybrid 50 doesn't use one. Not sure about the smaller turbos.

At my request, Piers built my modified HY35 in the fall of 01. First one he had done. He left the silencer ring in, but I removed it a year later. Removal didn't change the sound all that much, certaintly not to the point where it bothered me. Also, he set my wastegate so boost is ~29 lbs. because that was the best balence of smoke and egt's (I had DD2's and an EZ at that time). It's a spoolin' fool and I still love this turbo, but now with the comp and Don M 2. 4's (110 hp) level 3 and higher equals high egts. I'm still ok at level two and under because the PDR cam has given me some help. I've always known I'm giving up top end, but the trade-off for spool up has been worth it. I've only barked it once with a near rocket launch under a WOT power brake to take a lift pump pressure reading. Guy with the gauge under the hood almost hyper-ventilated.

I'm giving the DZ a look, but if they huff like the one I drove, not sure I will switch. Otherwise, the DZ is a kick-a$$ turbo.

Wish some of you other DZ owners would check in here.

Joe, I can not huff it with Hot Mach 3's (140HP) but I still have my original injector pump. LOL you get my drift.

but I do still have the whistle :(

The topend of the dz just kick's ass :D

My HX35 came with one. I had the 18 cm housing on it, and took the ring off; no difference. Put the 12 on, and the noise does a good job of keeping me under 70mph. It is cool to hear a first gen whine like a big rig as it echoes off the buildings. :D  Kind of wish I hadnt butchered the ring in removal, but what's done is done.

I like to add DZ on my truck too, but don't want any more noise then is necessary. I will for sure go with silencer ring in DZ.

My PDR HX35 came with a ring. You can get them either way. I tried with the ring removed and there was a huge difference in whistle. Actually was a little loud and I put it back in. My stock air system is gone, there is a system very close to the ASA with a AFE filter installed. I can hear the turbo slightly with the ring installed. I'm running 33 PSI boost and have had the new system bark once when I lifted too fast off full throttle.

with my stock turbo and swiss cheesed airbox when I let off during a hard pull it'd bark, LOUD.

Now with the BHAF it "sneezes". Kind of funny sounding.

Yes I can bark the Dodgezilla but not nearly as much as my PDR35. I do have the silencer ring but have never removed it so I can't give you an answer on that. It whines more than the PDR with the silencer ring. I also usually don't run more than 32lbs of boost so that probably helps in the barking dept as well. I have no complaints about this turbo.

Barking is such an "auto" thing. Tight coverters make it worse.

"Barking" results when lifting quickly after load.

"Huffing" has two meanings: Blown turbo, or turbo stall.

"Skipping" is what they call turbo stall in west TN. I just got a bad case of it with my 12v.

I'm going to fix it with an NV4500 !!! Worrysome as hell. WOT 30#, then shift or lock-up and BAM chug chug chuff chuff whooohoo. A wastegate might help. This is a B1 situation.

ONLY rarely do I "bark" my DZ(14wg). It is on the 6-speed 24v. Run it up to 45+psi and made the signature #'s with it. Love it.

I have no issues either unless I have to back out quick under heavy throttle.

I really like the turbo, works well for me.
