It's not a very exciting topic ,but I notice that whenever I check the transmission fluid the dipstick is not fully seated on the tube. Infact it is very close to uncovering the end which would allow contaminants to gain acess to the war room, that would be bad.

I was just wondering if any of you had noticed this also. It looks like the dipstick tube vibrates quite a bit at idle and I'm sure thats whats causing the thing to wiggle out. Has anyone BOMBed their dipstick tube??

My 99 is the same way. If I have mine in nuetral and I push it in all the way it immediatly pops back out to the same place. Now, do you check your transmission fluid with it pushed all the way in where you have to hold it in or do you take the reading from where it is when you open the hood (part way out)? Mine is still sealing the tube so I am not too concerned, it looks like the rubber grommet that seals the tube it what pushes it out. I am wondering if it is supposed to push itself out.

Mine used to do that. It seems that it was a bit to long and bottomed out on the pan. I removed about 1/4" and the problem stopped. It yours is the same you will be able to feel the slightest resistence when you insert the dip stick all the way.

LSMITH,
I push the dipstick in all the way to take the readings. The grommet has never come completly out(yet)but it is just barely hangin' on to the end of the tube.

Mine too! It's an '01. 5! You'd think that those so-called DC engineers would figure it out by now. I am concerned with trimming off the end and changing where the trans reads full. When the stick fits down further, the full line will also be lower. Don't want to run my trans low on fluid. Maybe, just maybe we should ask the DC engineers what is right! #ad

My 2000 did the same thing. I think I read a thread on here someplace a long time ago about this being a common problem. The dipstick hits the bottom of the pan. The recommendation was to cut it off. I was reluctant to do that for some reason, so I just took a pair of needle nose pliars and bent the bottom of the stick in a small tight loop back on itself.

I asked my dealer about it and he did not know anything.

Mine did the same thing #ad

the dipstick was too long, hence bout 3/8" was removed ( 1/4" was not quite enough ) and it bottoms out on the tube and stays there. This has been a problem for years as if you do a search you will find threads going way way back about reducing the length of the dipstick.

It's too long. I had the same thing. I mentioned it when I took it in for something (probably the goofy console tabs), and they trimmed it.

Mine to. Whenever my console lid comes in,I will get mine trimmed to. It never occured to me that it is to long,I thought it was the vibration that did it. Mine vibrates like crazy.

arlan is correct. I posted this over two years ago (first on the Happy Campers BB and then on the TDR BB). The transmission dipstick is too long, bottoming out on the raised corner (step) of the OE transmission pan. You can either cut off approximately 1/4" from the end of the dipstick or install a Mag-Hytec transmission pan (which was engineered correctly to eliminate the problem).

tmacc, you don't need to file any reference marks on the dipstick if you choose to remove the 1/4" from the end of it, the calibration will not be altered. After thoroughly investigating this (while removing my OE transmission pan and subsequently installing my Mag-Hytec pan), I know this to be true.

John and a few others are 100% correct. Trim the piece of C**P!!!!! Mine was the same way.

John and Walter,
If you trim the dip stick and re-insert it, won't it show a over fill situation? Or, is the level not that critical? Or, is it overfull before trimming?

tmacc, no it wont. The end of the dipstick JUST catches the corner of the OE trans. pan (at an angle), slightly bowing it, vibrating loose as soon the as the engine is started. You should be able to fully insert the dipstick into its tube... the level will be the same whether you have trimmed the dipstick or not. The only difference being the unmodified dipstick will pop loose from its seated position, the modified dipstick won't.

Another good reason to score a MagHytec transmission pan,I was wondering if that would solve the problem.
So many BOMBing missions,I just wish my wallet could just keep up!! #ad

Mike, I will be selling my present Mag-Hytec transmission pan after I receive the new DEEP version of the Mag-Hytec pan I have on order... in the middle of February (unless I can work out some other deal).
