It's real simple the oil drain bolts on the 12v engines (1989-1998) have a sealing washer that is independent to the drain bolt. This 22mm sealing washer has a rubber like exterior and believe it or not was suppose to be replaced every oil change. They are only a buck or two from ProWeld performance parts, and will keep that engine oil in place till the next oil change.

Now for all those with the newer 24V engines (1998. 5-present) your Dodge has a 18mm drain bolt that does not have an independent sealing washer, instead they made it all one part to save a fee dollars. Believe it or not, this part was designed to be replaced each time you change your oil also. Just that there are too many tight wades around that think they can just tighten the bolt a little tighter this time and skip out on the new drain bolt. Problem is they risk the chance of striping the thread on the oil pan or deforming the oil pan in the area where the drain bolt goes. Eventually the leaks keep getting bigger till it looks like a 72 Impala was sitting on at the parking lot. If you want trouble free service from your drain bolts, replace them after each oil change, same goes for those with sealing washers. All are available at Proweld and they even sell magnetic drain bolts, for those worried about internal Debra.

I have never heard of needing to replace the entire bolt. The washer on the plug on my 98 comes off, it's not on part like you say.

Mine has leaked since I bought it. Previous owner put a new plug, still leaked. I got a new one... guess what? It leaked. I'm betting someone at one point Bubba tighted the plug and messed up the pan a bit.

So all I do is before I put the plug in is smear some RTV around the hole on the pan. Stopped the leak. :D

my stock plug never leaked, I purchased the HD magnetic tipped geno's one and now it leaks, just a little, but I still like it, much better construction. I always clean all around the oil drain hole before I even drain the oil, and then I clead it really good before I put the plug back in, so I don't know why it's leaking, next time I change the oil I am going to have to look at it, it is just a little oil that sits there, nothing to bad.

I didn't have any problems with the stock plug, but I did replace it with the Plug It Right from Geno's. I haven't developed any leaks or problems.

I have changed oil on several different Dodges, & I have noticed that with alot of the 12V & early 24V, The oil pan can be drained when you loosen the drain plug out about half way. The oil literally runs out. When it stops draining, I pull the plug anyway, & its been empty every time. Tighten things up, and no leaks. I don't know if this common on all of the older trucks, but I sure see it alot.

My stock plug never leaked. My 01 had a sealing washer on the plug which I would change out every other change, never had a problem. Only time it leaked was with the Super Plug from Geno's.

I now have one of the two piece drain "systems" from Geno's that has a hose that screws into the plug fitting to let out the oil. No problems with this set up at this point.

Just checked out that EZ plug and thought it looked pretty sweet, might consider investing in that... any other testimonials?

My stock plug was a leaker, I bout the EZ plug. It comes with a copper washer, and I have not lost a drop since. Takes longer to drain out, so I just crack open another cold beverage.

Mine has never leaked a drop - I seem to recall some drain plug issues back when our trucks first hit the streets, to the effect that the drain plug needs relatively LITTLE torque for proper sealing - and that over tightening often deforms the plug and causes leaks.

I've been the only one to ever change oil on my truck, and have always been very careful to just snug up the plug, rather than really lean on it - and even at that, every time I change oil, I'm amazed at how tight the plug is to remove for the next change...

For a stubborn leaker, I'd get "up close and personal" to check for a possible crack or deformity at the plug flange sealing area - even with relatively loose threads, the plug sealing area should seat and seal properly - after all THAT is where the actual sealing takes place, not the threads... ;)

My oil plug just dumps oil after it is about half way out, probably before that, kind of a pain to get the plug completely out when the oil is coming out like that, never thought about letting it drain with the plug only half way out, going to have to try that :)

The stock plug has a very thin lip and you can break is loose from the main part of the plug very easily. The Geno's plug has a lip that is about three times as thick. SNOKING

My 04 had a brass ring. Changed that a couple time and still leaked. Got a new one with the rubber washer and still had problems. Got a 99 cent package plumbers putty (kind a like a heavy string) ,put that around bottom of thread and washer and never had a leek after. Not sure what is under my 06. Yet to change oil.
