The reason it does it is because of the turbo. The engine fuels on boost and with the restrictive turbo the fuel system continues to fuel based on the boost that hasent fallen off yet even though you are off the loud peddle. If you have a boost gauge watch it during a shift, you will see your boost hang for a sec along with your rpms and then it falls off and your rpms with it. Getting rid of the rpm hang when you shift is a nice bonus when getting that new turbo. This is also why it gets worse with a box, more boost, more time to bleed off that boost and hence the longer hang.

This might be true too, but cummins has had many complaints about this and in their findings they had said it was the pressure thing. So there could be more than one problem too.

No problem here

I've NEVER had mine flare one single time since day 1. I have over 16,000 miles now. Doesn't matter how I drive it, and even with the Bully Box now it always drops RPM when I let off of it no matter what.

They promised me it had 12 valves and the wiring harnesses were just for show. Don't tell me I got assimilated into the borg :eek:

Resistance is futile, you will be assimilated. Ever seen a Borg vessel on Star Trek? They've got all that plumbing on the outside - it's their common-rail fuel systems!

Only flared once the first time I towed. Now I seem to have that figured out. Glad the real redline is higher than 3250 however. :D
 
Keith at DD explained this much better than I ever could on another thread. Used all the correct nomenclature etc. I am not suprised people have complianed. But if you think DC never tries to shine anyone on then I have a unbreakable lift pump to sell you. Depending on how you drive you might not notice it at all. It will only happen when your making enough boost and then quickly chop the throttle. Im thinking most people learn to drive around it without even giving it any thought. I drove 4 different trucks when I bought mine and they all did it. My neighbor just got an 04 and claimed his didnt do it. Went for a spin with him had him flog it going up a hill and had him grab another gear (quickly, give it enough time and its not going to hang cause the boost will fall off) and sure enough, it hung for that brief moment. Is there some other problem that could be doing the same thing or contributing? I dont know. Are there some trucks that dont do it for some inexplicable reason? It would appear there are. Just throwing my 2 cents in here guys. If Keith was wrong then I am also since Im just passing along the jist of what he said. I think he is right but will be glad to learn better if that be the case. I know putting on the new turbo got rid of it for me and every other person I know who has put one on.

Krabman I do think your right, especially if keith told you this. I think when cummins said it was rail pressure that it really was But I think it is rail pressure due to the boost hanging on. So the real problem is the boost hanging on causing the rail pressure to stay on too.

so if the hanging throttle is due to the boost hanging around, would a blow off valve setup eliminate the problem? [if it does, 2 birds with 1 stone almost, fixes problem, sounds cool:D:-laf]
