On my '01 6-speed, there seems to be extra play in the gear shift whenever it's in gear. It's not completely loose, in that when you shake it by hand you can feel a slight resistance (almost like a small spring pulling on it). But while driving, it seems to dance all around while driving, especially on the rough county roads. While on the interstate it just has a little shake to it and I can keep it still just by resting my hand on it.

I was riding in my buddy's '99 5-speed and his shifter hardly shook at all.

So does anyone else have this problem? Is there anything that can be done to tighten it up?

My 02 6spd stick moves as I drive. This is my first Dodge with a manual trans but if the NV5600 is a top loader type trans as I would think it is. With the stick attached to the trans and not the body, it will move as the trans shakes on the rubber mount. The NV4500 should do the same as I think it also is a top loader. As for why your friends didn't I can not say but mine does.

I guess you could see if you could get a poly mount instead of a rubber one if any body makes them.

My 5 spd does too...

Do you have a lift kit? I do. I thought my shaking was somehow related to my lift kit. Mine seems to really "dance" in the "up" gears, especially 3rd and 5th. 2nd and 4th, the "down" gears, hardly shake at all... . :confused: :confused:

My stick shakes in my 4500. I don't have a lift either. Dunno if it is bad or just energy transmitted through the driveline.

My stick shakes plenty... . :-laf:-laf

my gearshift does too! not a lot, about 1/4 in and with bumps in the road.

doesn't bother me any.

I dunno about tightening. Hadn't considered it a problem.

I knew this topic couldn't run too long before this comment came out. :D

I don't have a lift kit either. And I see the same thing as DEZLPWR, the 'up' gears shake more than the 'downs'.

I didn't really consider it a problem, until someone pointed it out to me the other day. I checked out some other trucks and saw less movement, so I thought there might be a way to eliminate it in mine as well. I haven't got around to pulling the console around the shifter to look where the free play is yet, but that may be a project for some night this week.

It's a 2001 and has 52K on it. I pulled the shifter boot off this past weekend, but found that the second boot that is fastened to the floor requires the console part to be out of the way to get to the screws.

I'll keep you guys posted on what I find.

Scott,

I recently converted my '98 NV 4500 to a 2002 NV 5600 that had accrued 1200 miles before incurring a broken case in a wreck. I had to totally disassmble the 6 speed to replace the bell housing and can tell you the the NV 5600 is not a top loader!! It reminds me of a VERY large motorcycle transmission in that the forward gears are shifted on both shafts. The trans was a tough one to work on and much to my surprise had totally worn out the reverse synchro cone in 1200 miles. I set the shaft end play clearance on the tight side of tolerence and my stick does not shake. In fact the NV4500 has a "groan" or shake and vibration with heaving loading at lower rpms. The NV 5600 has none. Bad new is that the NV 5600 is grinding in reverse after only 1000 miles on the new synchro cone:{
