I just traded my 01' for an 05' dually and I'm wondering why these cr motors start so much slower than a 12v or 24v. Is there any fixes? I have discovered that I really hate the sound of a starter motor.

With the jerk pump on the second gens it injected fuel as soon as the pump turned and the engine would start. The common rail needs to do some crankshaft position sensing before the electronics can determine which injector should get the fuel since the whole engine is no longer tied together mechanically. To get the instant start you'll need to get an older truck again.

Ditto what Dieselnerd said. The ECM needs to get a reading from a few sensors before it knows when to fire the injectors. :) My '05 usually cranks for one or two seconds and then will start right up every time :D

Ever heard a 1st gen engine fire off? I don't think mine even will make one full turn of the crank before it lights up with a good kick. This is due to the idle control spring opening up the throttle momentarily until the governor comes up to speed and cuts it back.

You think the HPCR is bad, try the PSD waiting for oil pressure to come up!

Man that is true! I herd one the other day that took at least 3 secs of cranking before it started to fire and then another second or so before it ran on its own fuel!!!! Winter time will be a good test on their batts!!!! Mine starts faster at -40 than a a PSD at +80.

on the 6. 0 p-stroke, if you dont let the light go out, it will take time to start, if it goes out first, then it will start faster than my 03... ... .

It's true, my father has a '89 that seems to start as soon as the key triggers the starter. My 04. 5 always needs a second or two before firing. But it always starts, even at 13 below without the heater plugged in (my bad :( ). Hate to try that on old batteries though!!

I thought the same thing when I went from an 01. 5 to an 03. Sometimes when it was 90 degrees outside and the truck was completely warmed up it would take 1-2 seconds to fire compared to firing instantly on the 01. 5. But over time I noticed that it would take about the same amount of time at an honest -10F. Have to agree with previous posts about the computer having to find out where the engine is before adding fuel. I really think this engine starts better when it counts than the 01. 5. (Let's see if Ebottema is watching)

i noticed with the tst box, it cranks about twice as long, must have something to do with more and longer wiring and more thinking for timing???????????

Noticed that also occasionally, not always, but when it does , it usually will puff a healthy lil' cloud of black smoke. My EZ never did that, just the TST .
