he keeps the old lady down the street's cats off my trucks and out of my yard

:-laf :-laf

My oldest male, Sir, hates cats and occasionally, he "escapes" out the porch door. I am not sure how much we should push our luck, but he establishes his cat free zone at least once a week. I try to look innocent, walking down the street calling him back. :D They have all learned that when he barks, it is time to fire up their jets and evacuate the area. I should post a photo of him too, I'll see if I can find one with a Dodge in the background. :D Glen

I edited the post to add that I removed the console from my club cab so the two males can stand on the floor and look out the windshield. It also saves them from climbing over the seats when they get in. They each have a blanket on the rear floor that they can sleep on. Life is good! Mysteryman's photo of his Shepherd behind the seat made me think of it. Looks like his dog has that grey beard going on.

Geee thanks. Make me miss my puppies at home in Michigan.

Boomer (choc lab) and Bear (shep mix). Best 2 dogs ever. Boomer would always leave lots of dog slobber over a clean truck bed! Bear would just sit and watch the world go by while Boomer would always attempt to sniff anything and everything.

They started out in my dad's f350 every now and again. My dad sold that after a job change and got an S10. I didn't feel to safe on anything more then backroads in truck, not much of a bed

With my truck before I moved, they had to think twice about jumping in. A wee bit taller :) And there is no back sliding window for them to poke in and say hi.

But how do I miss the drives to the water, over to the sleeding hills in the winter, just plain running around town with them.

In the pics there are 3 dogs. . Cinnomon is the runt-ish husky/malmute. She passed a few years ago. thoses type of dogs don't like to be kept in much. 2. 2 acers appernetly isn't enought of a yard. She would take off once a year for a long walk. she was bout 8years old.

This is at my parents place. They lived outside 24/7 and had a doggie door to the garage in the cold months.

EDIT: my favorite pic of boomer: #ad

Look at that detail of the drool! :)

My shep keeps the yard a cat free/squirrel free zone. :-laf

My mutt is scared of dam near everything. It's a windy day out today and she's freaked out from the wind.

The mere mention of the words Cat or Squirrel will send my shep on a frenzied search.

Couple other four letter words are:

walk, ride, mail (she loves to walk to the mailbox with me..... of course making I dont get jumped by any cats or squirrels  ) chow, "who's here?" is another one, or "what was that? and "fetch" or "where's your toy?" :D

I tell her to "watch your mommy" (my wife) and SHE DOES!!

One time she wouldnt let my MIL in the house. I told the MIL,"Sometimes dogs have these instincts about people. " :-laf

Whose truck is it anyway? That would be Buddy next to the window and Sir on the hump. Mysteryman, I hope you can always look back and remember the good times. Wish you were closer, I could loan you one. Glen

The final chapter

Lucky and I arrived back where we started from in Maryland Thursday morning at 2:00 am ..... He rested peacefully on the ride home from Knoxville... . It was warm and sunny that afternoon so I let him ride in the bed till dusk... He only had strength to sit up one last time for a few minutes that afternoon. At dusk I put him in the club cab for the remainder of the journey... I had a 6 inch thick pad with blankets for him to lay on in the back of the club cab... . He had been running a temperature and was hot so I froze and left the heater off..... Among other things I am a musician. . Lucky always liked country music... (strange dog) I play at a live radio show each Sunday in Md. Lucky was always with me at every show I played... It was always the highlight of his week. All the people in the studio audience would bring him bones and treats... . While at the show Lucky would actually lay in front of one of the monitor speakers on stage and listen. The shows host really liked Lucky and at times he would get Lucky to speak over the air... . Lucky was such a ham at times. LOL. Well I had recordings of every show we ever played... I picked out a bunch of them that he spoke on and played them all the way back to md..... Like always he had his head right in front of the speaker in the back of the cab all the way home...

When we arrived at home I got him out of the cab and held him up to go pee . Then took him in and put him on my bed... ... . During the past week he had gone down hill fast. His sight was pretty much gone and he could not stand up on his own anymore. He had not eaten but a few slices of ham from subway in the past 2 days... . I stayed up all night with him... Every hour or so I would hold his head up and give him drink of water from a coffee cup... . At one point he was very restless... It was like he was trying to get up... . Finally he found the strength to roll over. Then he crawled over to me and rested his head in my lap.....

Lucky seemed to be happy to just be with me and despite is situation he still was not ready to go..... It was hard for me to watch him suffer like this... But the facts were, he could no longer walk, see or eat... Despite the fact that he never complained I knew he was in pain. So I called the vet and let him know I was coming... I called a friend to come over to drive my truck... . I carried Lucky out and held him as we rode to the vet in the back... .

When we got there we went to the room and I laid him on the table ... . I think he knew it was the end. He was frightened and began to pee himself as soon as I put him on the table..... I put a pillow under his head and scratched his ears till the vet came in... . I first had the vet give him a sedative to make him go to sleep. I talked to him and told him what a good dog he was and that everything was going to be ok as he drifted off..... He fought to keep from going to sleep for 40 minutes... . When the vet came back in and we were sure he was asleep the vet gave him the pink stuff..... It was over in a few seconds... .

I said my good bye's And told the vet to cremate him by himself and asked that Lucky be treated with dignity .....

Lucky had a good life. . He lived it to the fullest right to the very end..... He fought right to the very end ..... All he ever wanted out of life was to be with me and do whatever he could to please me... . He never let me down.....

Even while he was sick it seemed like he was more concerned about me and how upset I was than he was about himself!!!

I cannot describe in words the grief and loss that I feel right now... . I tried to save him but there was nothing I could do to stop the cancer... I was able to give him one more big trip and get him back home safely... . He got to visit all his friends around the country one last time... . Some how it does not seem to be enough to thank him for all that he gave to me...

Many of the decisions I had to make these past several weeks have been hard for me to make. . It hard for me to decide what the right things were to do. Thank you all for your support. Your imput helped me make these decisions and feel better about the choices that I made.....

I will have the return trip pictures in a few day.....

You are cold-hearted if that one does not water your eyes... . wishng only the best for you and yours... and thanks for sharing. Glen

Mysterman - My thoughts are with you. Your story brought a tear to my eye. I wish there were more people like you in this world that have the love and compassion for animals. It sounds like Lucky had a great life. God bless.

For some reason my screen is so blurry I can hardly see it. Sorry for your loss man, been there and done that and I am not looking forward to it again when my two go.

Mysteryman, I'm sorry for your loss as well. We lost both our "children" this last year. My 15 year old black lab/border collie, Mistletoe died of cancer just before thanksgiving. She went downhill very quick after we had to put my wife's 14 year old retriever/spaniel mix, Suzy Q down in the summer. We are looking to adopt new children very soon, even though they can never replace the "old bears".

I just had to leave my computer and pet my 9 yr old lab... My condolences to you, but you can rest assured you did everything you could and made it as easy and enjoyable as possible for him.

Mysteryman, I'd like to call you, Lucky.

I think you should call us all "Lucky" to have an associate like Mysteryman. I have found those who show that much love and compassion for their animals are great people to be around. Glen

i have been where you are and its hard

but i would do it all again and will be one day

i also must go pet the dogs
