Hello Everyone,

I'm new to TDR. Just bought a 1997 2500 4x4 12 valve. I'm trying to figure out how to wire in a switch somewhere so that the dome light doesn't come on when the door is open. I just pulled the dash apart and took a look at the light switch.....but haven't figured it out yet. I looked at the back of the door switches too.....it looks like they have 3 wires coming out of the driver's side switch (yellow, orange, black with green stripe...if I remember right). If anyone could shed some light on this circuit and how it is wired......and maybe a good way to solve this issue.....I'd be very grateful. Thanks!

Kind of a strange request, are you poaching?:-laf Pull the bulbs out. I think the door switches are grounds.

Toggle switches

My switches broke. I wired in a couple toggle switches. I guess this doesn't disable the light completely when opening the door, but according to the schematic, if you don't connect the door wire, it might - and only work when you flip the toggle.

Maybe - instead of using a 2 pole switch like I did, use a 3 pole switch. One direction lets the door lights to work, center position turns everything (the door circuit) off, the other position turns on the map light w/doors closed. So you will have the option of using the light with door open if you want.

Pop the door switches out and unplug them, then pop them back in. Takes about 5 minutes max to do both sides. I did that on my 1996 when I first got it because I like to listen to the radio on with the door open and did not want the light on and the "key in ignition" buzzer going off. You can still turn on the lights when needed with the headlight switch knob. On third generation trucks, you can turn off the lights with the dash light dimmer control. I disabled the "key in ignition" chime on my '03 by grinding about a mm off the tip of the key, so I can turn it back to "acc" position and listen to the radio. It also lets me lock the doors with the truck running and then unlock them with the key fob as I return. I use that "feature" if I am going to be in a store for 5 min or less.
