My courtesy-dome lights won't come on. I checked all fuses by the door and under the hood by the battery. Does anyone have any ideas???? Is there a fuse link in this circuit???? I have a 1995 3500 CTD.

Chech that the wires are securely attached to the switch. To do that you need to remove the switch. Remove the ash tray and screws holding the brackt, the cup spiller and the bezel will pop off. You will need to tilt the wheel down and if auto, shift into L to clear the bezel. Then there are 3 screws holding the switch in place.

If that's not the problem, check the bulbs in the both lights. The wire broke off on by underhood light a couple years ago, they don't like to be flexed that much.

Greg,

Did you check to see if you had power/ground to lights at bulbs?

Courtsey/dome/under hood lamp are provided power thru fuse 17 but have different grounds.

Re: Courtesy and dome lights won't come on----Fixed now!

Thank you Extreme1 and Missouri Mule! I checked everything that you said and it ended up being fuse 17. I did not pull that one out to check it at first because it was labeled IOD and had a yellow shield around that fuse. I thought that might be the fuse to the computer or something that they did not want pulled out.

Thank you again. TDR users are the greatest. :)

Now for why did it blow? Mine did because fumes venting from the drivers side battery had corroded the underhood light bulb socket so bad that it was shorted. Blew the fuse every time I opened the hood. My solution was a underhood light from a GM, it's on a self retracting spool with enough cord to reach the rear wheels.

I'm with you on that illflem.

Greg you need to find why the fuse blew.

Fuses blow because a power surge, or the component the fuse relates to is pulling to much juice. Probably wire (hot) shorting/grounding out before it reaches light.

illflem,

While reading about lights found out that the under hood light is turned on by mercury switch in series after the light receptacle.

As the hood tilts upward the mercury moves making a connection (ground) completeing the circuit. Apparently light as power to it all the time.

Maybe the fumes were atracted to the mercury.

Thanks for the tips guys. I didn't mention that my stock infinity radio/cd toasted a couple of IC's in it and literally smoked. The next day I replaced it with a nice Pioneer stereo and that is when I noticed that the lights didn't work. By the way I just read in my manual that IOD means Ignition off discharge... . this is a very low current draw on the battery for the radio and clock memory etc.

Thanks again.

:)

Yea, we know now

it was those "mean"smoke bombs that us electronics persons put into things to tell the others that we need more work (hehe) and where its located.

Just love that smell!!!!!!!

SOTSU!!

I thought that the yellow thing around the fuse was a easy way to turn off the dome and under hood light while working on the vehicle. It now appears that it is a good way to prevent battery discharge if you are going to be away for a month or three.
