Donaldson or Nelson 51" - Any Sound Files???

I'm thinking of changing out my muffler to give the truck a little authority. I want deep rubble and maybe some turbo whistle, but nothing else. IMHO (of course), the straight pipes & little mufflers sound too raspy... too much blap (wet fart'ish). (Sounds like I need something that reduces the "mid-tones"). I love the sound levels of the stock, but want it a little deeper, and the added flow rates would be great. From everything I've read, the 51"ers should give me just that.



Looks like the two part numbers are: Donaldson #M090544 & Nelson 86131M



Which of the two is quieter, and more importantly which sounds "smoother"?



There are lots of sound files from other mufflers, but I can't seem to find any from the big ones. Could someone provide one?

I don't have any files for ya, but I know dad's '03 with the Nelson has a horrible drone. I saw a pic of the Donaldson soon after installing the Nelson, and they are not the same. Donaldson has a baffle of some sort in the middle whereas the Nelson doesn't. Donaldson is still supposed to flow something like 3-4 times the factory chunk. Donaldson gets my vote, although to be fair, I've never heard one.

I have one of the donaldsons and I like the sound. I dont have the technology to post a sound clip, sorry. Cattletrkr is right, the Donaldson has a crimp in the inside. If you search some of my previous threads, I did a write up on my imprssions of the muffler.

Was your dad's a 51" Nelson 86131M?



I've had the Nelson 86131M (51") on for over a year. No drone at all! Straight through design. I am very please with the Nelson! Oo.

I don't remember the part # off hand, but yes, it's a 51" Nelson. Drone isn't bad empty, but still there. Loaded it's bad. Not sure why he's got it when others don't. I just know I like loud cummins', but not his.

I have the Donaldson #M090544.

I changed it from the Donaldson Silent Partner that was a 5" system. The change (from the Silent Partner & 5") reduced overall noise but most important killed the drone.



To me it sounds deeper than stock for sure and is most noticeable at idle and slow parking lot speeds. Higher speeds its pretty quiet which is what I wanted.

I think its a good compromise for increased flow while keeping the truck fairly quiet.
