What's the black tube/pipe with the honeycomb guts that attaches the airbox to the turbo do? I removed the honeycomb because I thought it was the silencer ring. What's the tube for and should I put the honeycomb back in?

Now that I know its not the ring, I'll go look for that.

It's the intake tube. No harm done. It's purpose is to make the intake quieter, not the turbo. What you are looking for is actually in the turbo itself. It's a metal cone shaped ring. Do a search or look through the threads as someone posted how to remove it a few days ago.

This is funny as hell! Before I posted the thread about the silencer ring a few days ago, I also figured it must be somewhere in the intake tube! If I didn't ask in the post I probably would have done the same thing you did.

Now that you demo'd the intake tube, use it as an excuse to get an AFE intake and a torque tube! Lots 'o Turb-o! Oo.

Gunnernmybike,

Did you buy your truck used?

I have had my intake open all the way to the turbo, where the silencer ring is, and I haven't found any honeycomb. I almost sound like someone installed and Turbo Air Guide (TAG) in your intake. You probably don't want to remove it because it helps guide the intake air evenly over the compressor vanes. Do a search on TAG to get more information or check out this link.

http://www.dieselpowerproducts.com/tag

It has a picture of a TAG.

Hey Gunnernmybike, have carnut57 shoot you a picture of the TAG. I'll second Rons guess that that is what you have.

Do a search on this-------"surprising result worth noting" (TURBO AIR GUIDE) ----------- go to second post and under the picture of the turbo, click on the words------ DIESEL POWER PRODUCTS

nah... hes talking about the honeycomb in the stock airtube... . he did ok

ceaman, I do not understand. I can stick my hand all the way through my air tube to the turbo blades. What am I missing?

It is something that can be put back in if I decide to right?

I'm assuming that there is a snap ring or something that has to be removed to get the silencer out.

Ronsrig, I bought my truck new. It's not the TAG it is the inners of the intake muffler. Ceaman posted a picture of what I dismantled.

SHyans, it kicks @$$. I did a bunch of extra driving just to listen to that turbo whistle. I made sure to keep the radio down and I drove with a smile. I even called my brother lastnight and told him to check out his '96 Powerstroke to see if it had a silencer ring and if so, to jerk it out.

What Barwire said and it is a 5-10 minute job.

Gunny, I was sitting next to another Cummins at the light last night, when I drove off I intentionally gave the turbo a scream. He caught up to me at the next light and rolled down his window to ask me about it. I'm sure he was in the garage before he was sitting at the dinner table!
