Donor found: looking for advice

So I got my crew cab last month, and I just picked up my donor out of the classifieds here. :D A friend is going to help me with the conversion which should begin around Thanksgiving. I'm looking for advise/suggestions/links to pertinent threads about things that I should do while the trucks are apart.

I'm thinking of putting in a DTT torque convertor/valve body, 16cm housing, drill for pyrometer probe, rear main seal, Rip's 4" downpipe... .

What would you guys do if you had the engine out? Is it any easier to do the KDP fix?? Any other seals/gaskets/problem spots to look at??? The donor is a '92 W250 with 280k on the clock. Auto trans was rebuilt about 30k ago. It has right front damage (radiator leaks) but starts up and drives fine. Doesn't even smoke very much. It was a one owner truck that was very well maintained and included many receipts for work done.

I'm going to keep searching, this site is full of great info and awesome people.

Thanks in advance,

Donald

Here's some pics for you.

Great Rig

Your starting with the exact same Donor as I did but your putting it an easier truck https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?t=92358&highlight=apache

Your wiring will be a little more difficult with the auto trans but while you wiring put an ext regulator for your alt it'll save a bunch of trouble down the road... . I still have all my notes from everything I did and used on my conversion. My Rig is basically a 92 dodge from the frame down. Are you planning on leaving the engine stock or are you going to add power?

I would definetily reseal your exh manifold(broke two bolts). It sure would be easy to put your pyro, turbo housing and injectors in with the engine out... .

If I can be any help let me know... . If you don't have a home for left over axles let me know

I would check the side cover gaskets for seepage/leakage, my ol' 93 would leak somewhat on a long drive, nothing serious, but a leak is a leak !!

Thanks for the tips guys, keep em coming.

towner, what did you use for a voltage regulator. I'm thinking it wouldn't be hard to put in a Mopar style electronic voltage regulator. I put one like that in my old '67 Dart when I converted it to electronic ignition.

I for sure want to get the 16cm turbo housing, gauges, and down pipe for the engine and probably a torque convertor for the trans. Not sure if the budget will allow for injectors right now. Also figured on doing the KDP fix while its out. Has anyone used the TST kit on a first gen? Or is it just as easy to get a tab from Piers or Cummins. Do I need to get seals if I just buy the tab?

From just reading up on the site it seems that Piers and DTT have some of the best reputations amongst the vendors. Also looking at Geno's for gauges and Rip's for exhaust parts. I'm planning on calling around and starting to order parts this Friday so any other suggestions on where to get stuff would be great. Probably also need to find a good Cummins dealer near me for some of the small parts (seals etc... )

Thanks again,

Donald

ps: axles have been spoken for :D
