Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Fifth for the Fourth

Ok, I've got these coming in the mail. I think I'm prepared for them (see my sig) The only thing is my stock HX 35/12 turbo. I tow pretty heavy, but only maybe 2 days out of the month (quad and dune buggy trips) the rest of the time it is used as a daily driver for work. I have 275's now but they seem to lag off the bottom. Every shift seems to leave me waiting for the boost to kick in. Is this my turbo, comp box, injectors, or a combination of all three? Are the Mach 2's gonna help or hurt with a stock turbo? I will try to get by without modifying the turbo unless you guys think I'm making a big mistake. I just would like quicker spool up and controllable EGT's. I'm hitting about 35 psi and have only been able to sustain 1300* on 3x3 WOT on the Comp when towing up a grade. It takes a long hill unloaded and the Comp on 5x5 to make the EGT's climb fast but never goes above 1350* even at WOT for extended periods. Do I have room for improvement? Thanks... ..... Jim

I think you will be pushing the limits of your turbo. A 14 cm housing might help hold the egt down. It's not to good an idea to spend much time above 1300*

You should be able to tow with the Mach 2's as long as you keep an eye on EGT's and keep the box on a lower setting (1-3). As Darkhorse stated try and not spen much time above 1300* or 1200* constant towing, if needed drop a gear to help with RPM's.

As for your lag, going with any larger turbo will only cause this to be worse. Have you checked your turbo to ensure it is working properly? Normally an HX35 spools pretty darn fast.

Adding more fuel with no additional air will increase your egt's... ... ... ..... especialy vulnerable at your elevation. Turn the box down and save money for more air. :D

I did my injectors and turbo at the same time so it's hard to compare... I will say that it's nice to be able to turn the Comp on or off as necessary. I find that I drive with Comp off most of the time daily driving (dyno'd at 340hp this way), use the Comp on 5x5 for "necessary" situations (dyno'd 434hp last weekend), and towed north over the Grapevine last week on 3x5 with 12k trailer and kept 60mph with no sweat and under 1300* EGT.

All that to say you'd probably find that a hybrid 35/40 or B1-2 would help. With my EDM3's I think I could have gone with a regular B1 instead of the smaller exh housing B1-2...

... and if you're around Sac sometime, drive mine on different settings and compare.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm probably getting a lag between shifts because of the big tires and 3. 55 gears. It just seems like it takes a while to add fuel at low boost, this is with the Comp on 5x5. Maybe I should just wait till I get everything put together and see what happens tomorrow , got the FASS and the injectors tonight but the FASS was missing one of the fittings,(bummer). BTW I ordered a 95gph, but I think I got a 150. That's what it says on the model number plate. Beast2B, I'll have to take you up on that offer, left u a PM..... Jim

Well, its 9:41 PST and I'm just getting in from my installation and test run. It spooled up very nicely, I'm happy. I tried a steep long grade with about 1500lbs of tile and tools in the truck with the Comp on 5x5, I hit 1300* in 6th gear and had to back out of the throttle because I was doing 95mph. It seemed like I could push it further but I think I lost some wheel weights so it started to get shaky. I would have thought 5x5 on the comp would easily push my stock turbo over 1350* ( not that I want it to), I'm wondering if I knocked the pump tap wire loose and I wasnt getting the full effect. My FASS installation didnt go so good though. I'm getting hard starts after the trucks sits for ten minutes, like the fuel is draining back down from the injection pump, also check engine light came on. Its a 99 so I cant read the codes fom the dash. I tried pulling off the old filter housing so that meant disconnecting the wires to it, maybe thats where the codes coming from, so I plugged it back in but still says ck engine. I get 16 psi all the time and everything seems fine but it just wont start without multiple cranks. Any ideas? ... ... . Jim

A check engine light will stay for a few run cycles after it illuminates. If all conditions are gone, the light will clear. I wonder if the water-in-fuel sensor caused the light once the wires were removed, and will it clear if the housing is removed from the fuel system?

As for the Comp, I could hit 1300* real quick with stock injectors and turbo, double check the pump connection and (if you haven't seen it in a hundred other threads) make sure the ground wire for the Comp is to the neg battery lead, fixed some erratic probs I had after the initial install.

You'll love the setup once it's dialed!

If your egt's are uncontrolable and you don't want to have to buy a turbo right now, consider a 16cm2 non waste gated housing for your hx35 it's affordable at about $150-250. this will slow your spool up a little bit but should lower about 100* egt's.

Just an idea, good luck.
