Mike, what are your feelings on the system that electrocutes them? Being a farmer I feel insecticides are safe, but I still don't like the idea of insecticides in my house or having to move out for awhile.

Hello Mr. Bugman
I do my own treatments at home. House is 5 yrs old. What is the strongest and deadliest thing I can buy at the hardware store and spray on the curtain wall under the house(crawlspace). To keep the termites away.
I also once did treatments back in 1979 for a small business. I have taken many a bath in chlordane.
Also y'alls armadillo's are diggin up everything in sight around here. What can I use besides a 22 rifle to git rid of them.

Jetson, It sure is a pity we lost Chlordane but we have recently been allowed to use a new product with a new mode of action, TERMIDOR. Much better than Chlordane ever close to.

Skydiver,Anything you could buy at the local store would'nt be very effective and would not last long. I would suggest that you just inspect the crawlspace annually, control moisture and have adequate ventilation. Yep our Armadillo's have been on the move, hehe. You could trap and relocate them or take away their food source which are bugs. They love white grubs in turf, thats what they are digging up your yard for. Use a good grubicide, they'll move.

cullmanboy, Basements are tricky and need a lot of drilling after the slab is poured. You would be better off hiring someone. Get several estimates and ask for a copy of the Termiticide they intend to use. A graph showing what will be treated and how should be furnished also. The product normally is applied at 1 gal/10 square foot on surface then 4 gall/10 linear ft per foot of depth to top of footing. Figure the amount of chemical yours will take, multiply the # of gallons by approx $1. 25 and throw out estimates that would not cover chemical costs. here's a link to your governing body: http://www.agr. state. ga. us/plant_ind/html/structural_pest_control.html.

I've been looking at houses since the early 60's. In the past 15 years I have found a lot more active termite tunnels. I suppose the result of outlawing the best and longest lasting chemical for killing them. (I'm an appraiser, not a bug man)

The county extension agent told us to kill the grubs also.
In the past I was spraying dursban under the house. It also helped control sugar ants.
I bought a years supply of dursban when it was banned. What is the best off the shelf for ants these days?

Lot's of different ants could be sugar ants and positive ID would be key to control. They are possibly Pharaoh Ants. The best product I have found is Terro. It is the one product I use that doesnt come from my supplier, it comes from Winn Dixie. Most supermarkets carry it. Better for Pharaoh's if mixed with an insect growth regulator. Another good product, if you can find it is Outsmart.

I got a bad load of firewood, and found out too late.

Finding the nest is key to Carpenter Ant control. Usually it is in a rotten part of a tree near the house (or pile of firewood).

Liquid or aerosol sprays for ant and roach control can be used. These will work well if the nest is exposed. Active ingredients include chlorpyrifos (Dursban), permethrin, pyrethrum, cyfluthrin, fenvalerate, tetramethrin, propoxur (Baygon), some formulations of diazinon, and others. Read and follow all directions for use.
Maxforce have granules for these ants I think.

My neighbor 2 doors down has termites in the wall. The local Home Depot has Spectricide bait spikes that go in the ground about every 10' to kill termites, your thoughts on the product.

Baits take a long time to work, over a year in most cases. I've known people that have been glad they only wasted $50 to find out the stakes dont work instead of over $2,000 like some others.
If Termites have a good food source inside a house they are unlikely to go near the stakes.
See if this wall is backed up to the plumbing end of a bathtub. If it is, cut a hole near the baseboard to access the bath trap. This one square foot hole in the slab is one of the most common entry points. Pour some kind of liquid Termiticide around the trap. A soffit vent can be used to cover the hole in the sheetrock.
