I know many bros out there have dogs, (those loyal, understanding, best buddies) that ride shotgun. I worry about the dog hitting the power window switch and getting hurt, is there an easy, clean way of disabling this otherwise perfect feature. . a switch perhaps. Where is the wire! Mines a '95 3500.

Stat, you're right,I've heard of dogs getting hurt by power windows. Usually happens when the car is left running and the owner leaves. Dog will stick it's head out the window, paws on the armrest, start rolling up the window till it's head is stuck, then in the struggle to remove it's head rolls the window up more and more...
Best advice is to treat dogs like you would a small child, keep your eye on them and don't leave the key in the ignition when you leave the vehicle. It would be easy to disable the pass window right at the switch by cutting the power(or ground wire?)at the switch, you would still be able to use the drivers side control to open it. You could also wire in a switch in place of or on one of the wires to the power window fuse to disable all, just make sure your dog doesn't see where you hide the switch.
My Australian Shepard has to be picked up and forced to sit up front,he hates it,but loves to ride in the back, even in sub-zero temps. In fact he would live in the bed if I let him. He can jump over the closed tailgate on my 4x4 without touching it,but I taught him early on not to jump out unless the gate is open,he won't even jump out if you call him when it's closed, just sits there and howls.

Bill, Yeah you gotta watch that Aussie... TOO smart! I "dabble" in training and one thing I have learned, the owner must be smarter than the dog. I know that sounds sarcastic but I am afraid it's true.

On the window, I think I will opt for a hidden switch, hope the wire is easy to find... I hate dashwork... too much blood! #ad

Looks like you have the same truck I do ('95, 5speed 3:54 rear end). Mom and I are hoping to get it together by summer and hit the road, gotta get a trailer.

Stat,so you will have to install the switch in the circuit with the 30 amp fuse. It has a black with orange tracer going to and a tan leaving it. Get at it by removing the 5 knee bolster screws and removing bolster. I would cut the tan wire. You won't have trouble doing this one, everything is out in the open and down low. A good place for a sub-miniature toggle switch is at the lower left hand corner of the of the steering column cover,I have the programming switch for my remote starter there. It is easy to get at while driving yet it is out of the way enough to keep from being flipped accidentally. For a disclaimer I should add disconnect the battery grounds before you start so the airbag doesn't go off on you. Have fun,at least you can do this job laying down. You have to.

Yeah the Aussies are smart,Zeke, my forth one, is just four years old now. He knows down, sit,go near, far, left or right with hand signals. Will pick up paper trash from the floor and put it a wastebasket if I tell him. Also taught him to shake his head yes and no,which I shouldn't have done, now when he doesn't want to do something(like stay) or doesn't like something he shakes his head no,but will still do it. About the only time he shakes yes is for something good to eat or if I ask if he wants to go in the truck or change irrigation. Also has a look I've never seen a dog do,when he doesn't understand something, like whether he should stay or come,he puffs his right cheek out, almost looks like he has a load of chew there. Best friends for sure.

WOW !!! You have some smart dogs !!! Mine just look at me and drool #ad
They do understand the basic commands, i. e. , sit, stay, come, etc. , but the only time they shake their heads is when it's time to loose the drool and place it some where on a wall, usually some place high. #ad
I have no idea where this fits into the forum, when they go for a ride, it's in the wife's Caravan with the third seat removed #ad

Thanks Bill, I will print those instructions down and get to it!

Mom is teaching the Vonnie & Abby (Standard Schnauzers) to understand sign language, YES, and they do get it, one has to get a pill daily so Debi puts it in cheese, she taught the dog the "sign" for cheese and now the dog goes to the fridge and waits politly. However the dogs don't chew! #ad

Thanks bro

If it was my dog he'd probably put a rap CD in the player,he knows I hate that crap.
No really shortshift that's good advice,in many states it's illegal to leave the engine running if no one is in the car,it's been documented that car thefts go up in the winter, mainly from people leaving their rigs running to stay warm while they're out of the car.

Shortshift, I guess you misunderstand me, no way would I even consider leaving keys and dogs alone in the truck... if nothing else I would hate being seen chasing a truck with a dog driving it! #ad
These guys just dig sticking their heads out the window and taking air while "Dad" drives.

I'm in the Cresenta valley where do you hide?

Stat,

Oh I got it. . good point. Its too bad the system doesnt have a passenger side lockout switch like alot of the foreign cars do. . I had a toyota p/u w power windows, & could flip the switch to turn off the right side window (from the drivers side). Didnt know the dodges dont have that - they should.

Could add a relay under the dash that cuts power to the right door.

Also, were pretty close. Im hiding down in the Santa Monica area, kicking back, and watching these crazy people act & drive like chickens w/ their heads cut off.

Something else that gripes my tail is the guys going down the freeway doing 70 changing lanes and poor Fido in the back gettin tossed around. I've seen several spots on the freeway that used to be a dog. I am almost certain they fell out,no houses around for a while.

Statland,

It looks like you already have some good advice in solving your problem, a switch.

Now to the dog/window story. My wife drives a toyo 4runner which already has the lockout switch. She goes XC skiing regularly with a friend, the friend's dog, and our dog. The friend's dog likes to ride with the window down and has figured out how to press the down button. Driving up to the mountain, the window goes down, my wife puts it up. Repeat this a few times before she figures out the dog is doing it. No problem, put the window up and lock it out. I doubt many dogs will figure out how to roll the window down, but just in case keep the lockout switch under the driver's control.

Hey Stat & scoob. . Welcome to Midevil Times! Looking forward to our Friday afternoon traffic... Hope they hurry up & get that frame covered.
