I mean let’s be realistic, over the past several years I’ve watched Dodge Trucks (and the others but I don’t pay as much attention to them) and every week there are many many Diesels at least $8,000 and sometimes $10,000 off MSRP! That just tells me that the MSRP is about as fictitious as you can get EXCEPT it does allow for some creative accounting when one calculates the profit and loss statement. Hey I got an idea, if they want us to feel good why don’t they make the MSRP say $80,000 and then show a really huge discount???

When I bought my new 2004, I test drove a used 2002 and they wanted $30,000. It was on the Ford lot. I went to the Dodge Dealer with the "quote" I had from the Idaho dealer and made a deal on a $43,000 window sticker truck. I paid just over $33,000 plus the warranty cost. No tax here in Oregon so I feel I made a rather good deal. I bought my 98 12v quad cab with 12,000 miles on it in 99 and paid $32,000 tax included in Calif. That was a rip now that I look back. My 04 is a great truck and Im really glad I didnt wait for a 2004. 5. . I didnt want all the smog stuff. I refuse to buy anything that has the Calif certified sticker on it.

Maybe it is a scam, but it allows the dealers leeway to make some good deals and some bad deals (from their standpoint)-let's face it, some people think if they get $100 off sticker they got a good deal...

Exactly! thats why it's hard to deal for the ones that want a really good deal. "Oh I just want to know if I can afford the payments" I don't care what it cost. Dealers foam at the mouth at these people. (Sign Here) X------------------------------------------.

I don't pay much attention to MSRP. What seems to be of most value when purchasing a vehicle is the Dealer Invoice price and what the incentives are back to dealers from the manufacturers. You can get that information of the Web. It always amazes me how you can buy a vehicle for less than invoice. You know they're making money somehow. My rule of thumb is after I make the deal, I don't look back or say to myself, "I should have gotten it cheaper. " That can drive you crazy.

hammersley: I'm with you man!!

MSRP, 'invoice', blah - blah - blah... . it's all a load of crap as I have seen numbers all over the place and don't know who to trust.

My point is I don't like a salesperson or manager telling me and showing me that's what they gave for the vehicle (factory invoice) numbers don't jive considering the up keep of employees, and inventory involved. I've got a printer I can put down any numbers you want. Example: I would rather to me (IMO) have them say ok the vehicle is MSRP at say $38. 000. 00, ok we will knock off say $8,000. 00=$30,000. 00 we paid $25,000. 00 for it from the factory which is probably giving them the benefit of the doubt being high for what they paid. Ok they will take that $38,000. 00 MSRP and knockoff a grand to start with. you come back saying no way. They come back with another figure lower, you still say no way. Then out comes the so called dealers invoice this what we have in the truck bottom line $34,000. 00, now sir that's $4,000. 00 off MSRP. You still say not low enough. Then a little back and fourth dickering and finally compromise at a deal of $31,000. 00 after they had already spilled there guts out telling you that $34,000. 00 is what they paid (factory invoice). It's a complete understanding they have to make a profit to keep the business going, it's the way they go about it to me, but it is also a gamble on there part that you may be one those that walks in completely satisfied with a $1,000. 00 off MSRP. It does not bother me one bit to find the best deal at one dealership, and turn around an have the service done at another I have always been treated fairly at other dealerships as far as service goes. Meaning I have never had the well "sir since you did'nt buy from us we'll just have to put you on the back burner". :D

If the sticker on the Dodge trucks was firm I would not buy one. I don't think the truck i'm buying is worth 37,500, but at around 30,000 its not a bad deal, I think the average price of a new car/truck is 26,000 or so. I think the US auto makers will soon go to more realistic pricing like the forgin auto makers. I know BMW, Volvo, Volkswagen don't move much on sticker, maybe 500-1000 bucks.
