Door Mirrors

My truck, a 93 D350 CC, has the original chrome, non west cost type, mirrors. Does anyone know if the L shaped tubular arm part of the mirror is available in extended lengths? Currently, when I have my camper loaded, I have to use those darn plastic slide on mirror extensions, as my stock mirrors do not extend out far enough.

John, if you reverse the mirror tubes on the existing mirrors (thanks to Ian - 1st Generation) you will gain approximately 1. 5 inches on each side. I am not sure if that is enough for you, but if you are interested in doing this you can contact Ian.

John, most camper dupply places have mirrors that mount on the overhang of the camper. Problem solved!

This is Ian.
While on holiday in a campground in Oregon in August 1999, I saw a '93 W250 with the mirror tubes reversed. Didn't take long to strike up a conversation with the owner. Reversed the tube on my driver's door right there, did the pax one a few months later.
Takes 3 - 4 hours to do each side, need to get the door liner off to unplug the mirror electrics then remove the complete mirror assembly from the door. Before removing the mirror electric plug, motor the mirror full to the left (driver's door) so that you can get in behind the mirror with a small wrench to undo the two clamp securing bolts. I used a 1/4" Snap On ratchet and a 1/4" drive socket.
Once it is all back together, mount a 5" convex mirror between the door and the mirror as there is quite a large blind spot abeam the back wheel of your vehicle.

I have a comment about those "plastic slide on" mirrors. A couple of trips back pulling my travel trailer, I got pretty frustrated trying to see anything in them due to the vibration. I made sure they were adjusted correctly then dabbed silicon sealant at 4 spots around the edge of the mirror and frame. This really settled the vibration down. I marked the inside of the housing for right and left and when I used it again it was easy to reinstall on the correct side.

Now that there is a way to extend the factory mirrors, I may do that instead. Does this seem to cause more vibration with the mirrors?

Anyone have a simple way to get rid of that darn convex mirror on the passenger side? I backed my trailer into something last year because I couldn't tell where I was.

I use extended factory mirrors and find it wholly unsatisfactory. The don't extend far enough,and without power mirrors they blow out of position easily. I solved the problem after seeing a slide-in camper with its own mirrors mounted on the cabover portion. That's the ticket!

Dad (has a 92) had a friend of his bent up some longer stainless steel tubing to gain somewhere between 2-3" which worked for him. Same process as the others but needed to leangthen the wires a little.
I had a camper with the mirrors mounted on the cabover part which caused some rot in the bed after a few years so keep an eye on them if that is what you decide to do.

It is more than a year since I reversed my mirror tubes, no vibration problems at all. If you don't do the clamp up tight enough on the door, the mirror could move when you close the door.
As for the convex mirror on the pax side, check with a wrecker, you might be able to buy a serviceable driver's side mirror and make the change. Just an idea, I have not done this myself.

I have a 91 and a Lance camper. I found these cool mirrors that look exactly like the OEM mirrors except that they have an adjustable arm. The Bottom of the arm has a race machined in it and the mirror has a cap screw that can be loosened and then you slide the mirror out and re tighten the screw. When you are not towing, simply loosen, and slide the mirror back in,presto. These mirrors are identical to my dodge mirrors and the vibration when extended out a couple of inches is negligible,but gets bad if you go much farther. This setup works well,I have over 15,000 miles with these on pulling this camper and no problems. I'm sure any RV supplier can get you a pair of these. Good Luck.

The mirror head will slide out on the pipe. The glass must be removed to access the screws to loosen the grip. If this isn't enough then you'll have to have some form of extension.
