2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Door seal gone bad??

Greetings , I think my drivers door seal is going. If you look at it seems to be in good shape but when you go down the highway it whistles so loud you cant hardly hear the radio. How do you tell if it's bad. The spot at wich it whistles is just up from the automatic miror adjuster. Thanks and happy new year. Brian

Try adjustring the door lock loop at the rear of the door opening - -take a large torqs bit, and adjust it in about a quarter of an inch from where it is. It is probably the front door hinge pin gettin' loose, but the above fix will solve the problem short term.

What I've done for air leaks around doors, is first find the bad spot. I do this by putting a dollar bill in the area you think the noise is coming from, then shut and latch the door. Then pull the dollar out. Do this all around door, paying attention to the amount of resistance at different spots. If it's easy to pull through, it's not sealing.

It's not unusual for seals to to become stiff, cracked and lose their ability to maintain contact with the door frame, especially after ten years or so.

After you find the bad spot, then you can determine whether to adjust latch, or install a new seal.

On a 12 year old truck, thats alot of work. I personally spent the $40 on each side and replaced them.

Thanks guys I thought maybe the door latch could be moved in toward the body of the truck. CD. DAY that brings me to a good point about the door hinges going bad... they are can and how do you replace the pins in the door? I've seen the replacement hinges for dodge ram in LMC truck parts for around twenty five bucks. . will those work? I've looked at the door hinges on my door and have no idea how to replace them.

There is a kit available at most auto parts stores.

It's a pair of larger diameter hinge pins. You then drill your hinge pin holes to the specific size needed for the new larger pin.

This will usually work unless your hinges are really bad.

It only takes about 5-10 min. per door to do this check. I like to do it because sometimes the doors don't stay perfectly flat against the cab. Especially if it's had previous body work.

If the door seal along the top seems to be the problem, you could try what I have done.

Be very careful when you do this and remember to have the window rolled down. Bend the top of the door in towards the body by sitting on the seat and brace your feet against the door below the window, hold the door above the window and pull. Do this gently and check the door each time to see if you have changed any thing. The door is somewhat springy and will move back.

For the big burly types be very gentle and slowly increase the pressure checking between each attempt. I am smaller and I was surprised at how much it took to get a noticeable change. If the door seal appears loose towards the front of the door work that area or the same with the back of the door.

Again start gently and increase the pressure a little each time until you are satisfied.
