My truck just came in and I will be picking it up on 1/3/05. I can't wait! Anyway, has anyone tried taking a notch out of the offending part of the seal? If others are already torn and not leaking you would think notching out the offending part of the seal would correct the problem. I know we shouldn't have to do this but it would be a semi-permanent solution until the new weatherstrip comes out.
My 05 is also starting to do this and I anly have about 350 miles on it. I too want it fixed, but I am not going to rush in to anything until they fix it right (different seals). Has anyone with the torn seals had any problem with water leaking into the cab at all?
My 05 has different seals than my friends 04. 5. The area where the front edge of the door would normally drag across the door seal is flatter and feels like a tougher rubber. As far as I can tell the door does not touch the seal at all, and if it did, it looks like it will wear much better.
I just took my truck in to the dealership because they scratched my windshield so Im getting a new one installed with the dealership taking the hit for the cost, at the same time this morning I advised them of the weatherstrip, the advisor looked at it like a common problem. I advised him that the passenger side was also doing to the same thing, so hopefully they both get replaced, the driver side already has a chunk gone so well see. Im more worried about them sealing my windshield correctly then the weatherstrip though. My truck also only has 5,000 miles on it.
Both sides of mine have pieces missing with 17,000 miles on the truck. I took it in today, they said no problem we know about it. He said it would be 2 weeks before they get any replacements they are backordered.
I'm headed back in for my 3rd set of door seals at 12,000 miles. I sent off to Dodge tonight that TSB 23-008-04 and Part No. 55275616AC are not working and asked if they were working on a new seal. I adviced that I have seen this problem on 2003/2004,and 2005 trucks. I'll post their repley... . Thank you for your email message regarding the weatherstripping issue
with your 2004 Ram 3500.
We are very sorry to learn of the service problem you have encountered
and have opened a file to investigate this issue with your dealer.
DaimlerChrysler will provide any technical assistance your dealer may
need to help them in resolving this problem.
At this time, we would recommend that you stay in contact with your
dealer. They are the best source for updates concerning the status of
repairs to your vehicle. I have asked them to contact you... I love when they dodge the question, all I asked if there was a new seal in the works and adviced this tsb is not working.
Talked to my dealer yesterday and they said there is no 3rd fix coming up for this problem. They said the seals they are replacing are working fine with the fix-so I will have them put in and see how it goes.
I'm thinking some of this has to do with how the door is aligned. I have 30k on mine and they show a little mark, but not even enough to make a stink about. But there's folks who have destroyed multiple sets in less than 30k.
New seals installed 12-16-04. ---55275616AC--Sharp corner of door rides over top of seal lip. This seal is smaller in size than original -and softer. --So far,no rub or wear marks. Replaced under TSB 23-008-04
So, I have heard that the TSB works for some people and still tears for others. I also heard that there would be a new TSB replacing the current one. My truck only has 350 miles on the clock and the strip is already tearing. Does anyone have an update on this issue?
Woodworkers often make use of something called UHMW or Ultra High Molecular Weight, a super slippery plastic or nylon type of substance, very resistant to scuffing. It is sold as a sheet product but is also available as a tape. Don't know if the Home Dump carries it but a wood working suppl;y store would surely have it. Also available in varying widths, self adhesive backed, up to 2 inches or so. This stuff is tough and really slippery.
I had my door seals replaced in Dec. and two weeks later the drivers door seal already showed tearing. I called the Dodge Dealer 12-29-04 and ask them to check on this for any new fix and haven't heard from them yet. I will call today to see what is going on. Have a great day.
My driver's side weatherstripping was slit too by the door design. While I am not thrilled with this, this truck replaces a 95 Chev TD and a 89 Ford. If this is the worst it can get (fingers crossed) then I am happy. So far, some problems, but nothing like its predecessors.
By the way, the fix was quick, flawless and no hassle.
I have posted several times to wait until the side specific parts are released. Replacing them now will just result in another trip to the dealer and a chance they will mess up something else. I checked the new PN's today, and they are still superseding to the single PN that is the same as you have on your truck now. I know it has been promised for a while, but they actually did issue the PN for the new seals, but never released them.
The newest weatherstrip has the flattened area where the door was tearing the old ones. They use the same design as the Jeep Grand Cherokee. There is no touch with those and no wind noise.
