Would you post a picture or link please of the bumper you are referring to?... .

aluminum by its very nature oxidizes when exposed to air,,, this is how it creates its own "skin". . without coating it will ozidize and require polishing... . some companies clear coat. . most dont

Powdercoating LOVEs aluminum... I am considering building an aluminum bumper. . I was going to powdercoat it the same color as the truck

I have had one for 5 or so years. It is black powdercoated though. He used to sell them like that as an option. I thought he quit doing them due to the time and labor required to clear coat it (surface prep time). Layne is a good guy and I suspect if you ask him how he used to do it he would tell you and you could do the prep and get it coated yourself. Not sure if he is still a member but MacTruck had one and had pictures on the site here of it. It looked very good.

Are you saying the powdercoating sticks well to aluminum? I tried clear coating a polished aluminum bumper before and it did not stick. At least with an opaque powder coat the surface could be scuffed up. How do you prep the aluminum?

I built a bumper almost exactly like that a long time ago. The nice thing about the brushed finish instead of polishing, is a little steel wool makes it look like new anytime.

The Reunel stainless bumper is pretty much impervious to weather and at 3/16" thick it is strong but not too heavy. It is pricey but worth it, imho.

yes. . I use to own a powedrcoating company and we did aluminum all the time. . slight acid etch during power wash . . bake off to remove olis. . coat and bake... powdercoating goes on aluminum nice and smooth. . you can clear coat . . like most of the wheels today. . they are cleared with powder. .

bumper should run about 100-150
